From populating an early conservation database using IBM key punch cards to protecting many thousands of acres of ecologically significant lands in South Carolina, 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award winner Tom Kohlsaat ’73 MFS has always been guided by the relevant conservation needs of the day.

This year’s incoming class is one of the most diverse in Yale School of the Environment’s history, with students coming from six continents and 31 countries and from 29 U.S. states and territories.

YSE Class of '23: After working in rural Kenya and  a Neotropical premontane cloud forest canopy in Panama, Cameron McKenzie found his niche in urban forest stewardship.

YSE students spanned out across the globe for annual field studies during spring break.

As a woman, a scientist, and in countless other roles in her life and career, Sharon Friedman ’77 MFS defied expectations and challenged norms. In recognition of her accomplishments and dedication to the School, she will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from YSE at Reunion Weekend 2022.

The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment has helped establish the Northeast Forest Farmers Coalition, an education and outreach program designed to help the region’s forest landowners build forest farming operations.

Renowned environmental authors recently took part in a Yale-led discussion that celebrated the release of Old Growth,  a collection of essays and poems about the rich inner lives of trees.

Dean Burke commends this year’s graduates for their resilience, true expertise, scholarship, and leadership during a historically challenging time.

This year’s incoming class of 137 master’s students at the Yale School of the Environment span six continents and 21 countries, including 29 U.S. states and territories.

The 152 students who have already completed at least one academic year at F&ES are spending their summers in 34 countries and in states across the U.S., completing internships or conducting their own independent research.

While he was a student at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES), Zach Parisa ’09 M.F.S. developed a technology that uses satellite data to determine the size and species of trees in forests.

Each year the Tropical Resources Institute sends students across the world to conduct research in the world’s tropical regions. This year, of course, is not like most years.

A broad science background and some old-fashioned pluck helped Jean Thomson Black ’75 MFS build an impactful career in science publishing, for which she was honored with the School’s Distinguished Service Award at Reunion Weekend 2020.
