We understand that choosing where to apply and attend graduate school is about more than just finding the right academic fit and that LGBTQIA+ students are seeking a safe and supportive community where they will be empowered to pursue their academic studies in the environmental field and feel welcomed and reflected in the student body. Through sustained collaboration with students, staff, faculty, and campus partners, YSE continues to be committed to creating a welcoming and affirming environment.

To assist you in your journey to join the YSE community, the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has compiled a list of answers to common questions and links to YSE resources and support organizations for LGBTQIA+ students.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    1. What kind of support and engagement opportunities does YSE provide for LGBTQIA+ students during the application process?

The YSE admissions team is available to answer questions and help guide applicants through the process. Our office also provides opportunities for LGBTQIA+ applicants to connect with current students, faculty, and alumni at various events and other points of engagement throughout the application process.

    2. Do I have to discuss my orientation in the application?

Applicants are not required to disclose their orientation during the YSE application process. Applicants may decide to discuss their orientation if it is a part of their personal narrative. The admissions process is predicated on assessing an applicant’s unique experiences, academic achievements, academic readiness, contribution to the incoming class, and potential for success; therefore, an applicant’s decision to disclose their orientation does not affect the final decision on the application.

    3. How can I share my pronouns in the application?

YSE’s application provides an optional section in which applicants can choose to select or enter their preferred pronouns.

    4. When should I apply for financial aid?

As soon as possible! Our financial aid application deadline is February 15. Late applications will not be accepted. This means that you should not wait until you are admitted to the school to apply for financial aid. If you miss the financial aid deadline, you will not be eligible for YSE scholarships at any time during your studies at YSE.

    5. Does applying for financial aid affect my chance of getting admitted?

No, our admissions process is completely need blind. The admissions selection committee is not provided any financial information on applicants. Our goal is to admit the very best students regardless of socioeconomic status.

    6. What programs and support resources are available at YSE for LGBTQIA+ students?

YSE offers a variety of focused events as well as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office (DEI). Our Student Interest Groups (SIGs) are created and led by students. They provide opportunities to facilitate connections among students with shared identities, customs, experiences, and backgrounds to create a sense of community. The DEI Office strives to foster a school environment that supports all individuals and increases collective learning, awareness, and empathy. The office also partners with YSE’s leadership to define the strategy for advancing diversity initiatives to create an inclusive school community.
