What is Yale’s definition of sexual misconduct?
Sexual misconduct incorporates a range of behaviors including sexual assault, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, stalking, voyeurism, and any other conduct of sexual nature that is nonconsensual or has the purpose or effect of threatening, intimidating, or coercing a person.
Yale’s policies and definitions in relation to sexual misconduct apply to all members of the Yale Community, regardless of their sex or gender.
Who can I talk to if I am involved in a sexual misconduct incident, or witnessed one?
Whether a survivor, respondent or someone who witnessed sexual misconduct of any kind, there are University resources and offices available to help. These offices and their staff work closely together to support the needs and well-being of our community members.
- Sexual Harassment & Assault Response Center (SHARE) offers counseling and assistance for members of the Yale Community who have experienced sexual misconduct either directly or indirectly. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 203-432-2000.
- Title IX Coordinators are senior administrators and faculty members throughout Yale who can answer questions/concerns related to sexual misconduct, coordinate resources and remedies, and investigate complaints to the degree possible consistent with the complainant’s wishes. The Title IX Coordinators for YSE are Andrés Fernández (203-432-6286) and Lauren Horner (203-432-4247).
- Yale Police operate 24/7 and is comprised of sworn police officers, including a Sensitive Crime and Support Coordinator. They can be reached at 203-432-4400.
- University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct (UWC) is Yale’s internal disciplinary board. The UWC is available to assist with filing a formal complaint or answering questions and concerns about sexual misconduct.
What are the options for reporting an incident?
Reporting an experience of sexual misconduct is just a conversation that allows you to discuss your options and gives you access to various resources. Whether you have experienced or witnessed an incident or behavior, there are multiple venues through which you can make a report. The staff at each office will work closely with one another, if you wish, to help meet your needs. The reporting options are not mutually exclusive: you can pursue any of them as you wish.
