As a commercial specialist for the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, Janice Tran leads the mission’s energy, environmental technology, and climate change efforts. She helps create opportunities for U.S. firms in Vietnam, liaises between the embassy and local authorities on environmental issues, and leverages interdisciplinary agreements and relationships to promote policies and private sector engagement that can accelerate Vietnam’s energy transition.
Tran said the challenges facing Vietnam’s energy sector are numerous — from increasing energy demand and weak infrastructure to the growing threats of extreme weather and sea level rise. To meet those challenges and advance climate resilience, she is using the tools of international trade, diplomacy, and sustainable finance.
“Working in Vietnam's energy transition sector presents a unique set of challenges that both motivate and inspire my efforts in this field,” Tran said. “These interconnected challenges inspire a commitment to finding innovative solutions, fostering collaboration, and driving the transition to a more sustainable energy future in Vietnam.”
Tran, who has a master’s in international business development from the University of Nottingham, said the Financing and Deploying Clean Energy certificate program is helping her build tangible skills in risk management and financial modeling. It is also allowing her to explore creative financing mechanisms and develop a more global perspective that will help her navigate the complex landscape of Vietnam’s energy sector.
“Ultimately, this program will equip me with the tools and knowledge to contribute effectively to Vietnam’s renewable energy transition, driving collaboration among stakeholders and helping to create a more sustainable and resilient energy future,” she said.
