If conservation in American has entered turbulent waters, a new book by Gary Machlis ’79 Ph.D., a former science advisor to the director of the U.S. National Park Service, aims to serve as a navigation guide.
The book, “The Future of Conservation in America: A Chart for Rough Water,” co-authored by former National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis, is a “candid, passionate, and ultimately hopeful book” for a challenging era in conservation.
Machlis will discuss the book at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) on Wednesday, March 7. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in Bowers Auditorium, Sage Hall, 205 Prospect Street.
The event will be followed with a discussion and book signing at 6 p.m. at the Yale Book Store, 77 Broadway.
As environmental policies come under increased assault, climate change threatens ecosystems and species, and disparities in environmental justice widen, Machlis and Jarvis articulate a conservation vision “that binds nature protection, historical preservation, sustainability, public health, civil right and social justice, and science into a common cause.”
They also offer real strategies to make a difference.
Machlis, who was the first science advisor to the director of the National Park Service, is now a professor of environmental sustainability at Clemson University.
