Members of the Yale community are invited to the third annual Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean Conference at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) on Saturday, April 7.
This year’s conference, “The Silent Leadership in Latin America and the Caribbean,” will highlight the region’s crucial contributions in shaping the path toward global sustainability.
In a series of panel discussions and keynote addresses, the conference will explore common challenges and success stories across gender equity, indigenous identities, and the quest to advance sustainable development.
Born out of a student initiative, the event will be co-hosted by F&ES, Grethel Aguilar, the 2018 Dorothy S. McCluskey Visiting Fellow in Conservation at F&ES, and the Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies (CLAIS) at the Yale MacMillan Center.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. April 7 in Burke Auditorium, Kroon Hall. Breakfast, lunch, and closing cocktails will be offered.

Keynote speakers include Aguilar, regional director for International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for Central America, México; Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Global Climate and Energy Program Leader at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF); and Julia Carabias, a Mexican ecologist and environmentalist, and recipient of the United Nations Environmental Programme Champions of the Earth Prize and the Belisario Domínguez medal.
