Scattering Seeds on Earth Day

Note: Yale School of the Environment (YSE) was formerly known as the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES). News articles and events posted prior to July 1, 2020 refer to the School's name at that time.

The Environmental Stewardship Committee(ESC) is inviting members of the F&ES community to join them in launching seed packets across Science Hill in celebration of Earth Day on April 22.

Participants will be asked to prepare the so-called “seed bombs,” or seed balls — composed of native wildflower seeds, clay, compost and water — on the southern lawn of Kroon Hall beginning at 10 a.m. After the seed balls are allowed to dry for a few hours, participants will reconvene at 3 p.m. to spread the seeds on specifically targeted areas.

“We hope to engage the F&ES community, the Yale College Environmental Studies community, and really any interested member of the Yale community in this fun, hands-on event,” said Sara Smiley Smith, ESC member. “This is a great way to campus beautification!”

Co-sponsors include the Yale Office of Facilities, the Yale College Environmental Studies program, and the F&ES-based Ethnobotany and Economic Botany (STIGMA) student interest group.
