Associate Research Scientist

Nohemi Huanca-Nunez is a tropical community ecologist whose research focuses on the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity in tropical forests. She studies early life stages of trees (e.g., seedlings) to understand processes shaping community assembly and species coexistence. Her work integrates long-term monitoring, experiments, and functional trait data across above- and belowground plant systems. More recently, she develops AI-based approaches that combine imagery, hyperspectral data, and species descriptions to improve seedling identification and scale trait–demography frameworks for forest restoration.
