The joint-degree program equips environmental engineers and environmental managers with the skills and experience needed to address the complex relationship between technology and the environment. Resource depletion, climate change, biodiversity, disease, food supply, and energy are critical societal challenges for the 21st century. Students in the joint program will be well prepared to design and manage engineered and natural systems that address these societal challenges, while considering the complex technical, economic, and sociopolitical systems relationships.
Students in the 2 ½ year joint program earn one of two environment degrees: a Master of Environmental Management (MEM) or the Master of Environmental Science (MESc) from the Yale School of the Environment (YSE), and a Master of Science in Engineering (MS) from the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). The program length, while atypical, offers several competitive advantages for graduates’ marketability. Students graduating in December will enter a job market with less competition given the significantly fewer degrees granted on this cycle.
Course Requirements The joint MEM-MS degree program requires completion of 60 credits (as defined by Yale YSE system) or 20 courses (as defined by the Yale Graduate School system) as well as a summer internship and capstone project. The joint MESc-MS degree program requires 60 credits (as defined by Yale YSE system) or 20 courses (as defined by the Yale Graduate School system), with Thesis Research comprising at least 12 credits (equivalent to 4 courses), as well as completion of a Master’s Thesis.
In addition, all joint-degree students are required to attend three weeks of technical skills training before beginning their studies at YSE. These are hands-on workshops, offered every August, that teach plant identification, ecosystems management, land measurement, and urban ecosystem analysis as well as professional skills, including diversity and inclusion training, quantitative data analysis, data visualization, and environmental communication.
As with other joint master’s degree programs, students will be required to be independently admitted to both Yale units. Admission to both can occur prior to entry, or admission to a second unit can be applied for during the first year of residence in either program.
Students pay tuition for three semesters at YSE, and two semesters at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
