Business / Management (MBA)
Joint degree with the Yale School of Management
On This Page
Yale University offers a master’s program that combines environmental studies with the study of management. Students in the program draw upon the resources of the highly ranked Yale School of Management and those of Yale’s global school of the environment, the School of the Environment. Upon graduation, they join a collegial network of alumni of the program in business and the environment. The joint degree is strongly supported by the Center for Business and the Environment.
Students in the three-year joint program earn one of two environment degrees - the Master of Environmental Management (MEM) or the Master of Forestry (MF), and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the School of Management.
The joint program reduces the total time of study by one year.
Course of Study
The joint-degree MEM program requires a completion of 36 credits as well as a summer internship and a thesis or a capstone project. In addition, all joint-degree students are required to attend three weeks of technical skills training before beginning their studies at YSE. These are hands-on workshops, offered every August, that teach plant identification, ecosystems management, land measurement, and urban ecosystem analysis. Please see Degree Programs at YSE for more information.
The Yale School of Management (SOM) core curriculum is unique in how it ties together the pieces of a business school education into a meaningful whole. Instead of teaching management topics in separate, single-subject courses like Finance or Marketing, SOM offers a core curriculum of eight multi-disciplinary subjects. Each faculty team teaching a core course is composed of senior professors from several academic fields. This teaching model reflects the fact that managerial careers cross disciplinary boundaries. Please see SOM Curriculum for more information.
Each school individually admits students in accordance with its own criteria. Prospective students may apply to the program prior to matriculation by submitting a separate application to each school during a single admissions cycle. For more information on admission, please visit YSE Masters Admissions and the School of Management Admissions.
Students pay tuition for three semesters at YSE, and three semesters at the School of Management. For more information on applying for financial aid at YSE, please see the YSE financial aid website. For information on financial aid at SOM, please see the Yale SOM financial aid website. Students must apply for financial aid at each school, and any aid awarded will apply to the semesters in which a student is enrolled at that particular school.
