Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives

Job Summary 
The Assistant Director Strategic Initiatives leads and performs a broad range of projects and priorities related to strategic initiatives, focusing primarily on strategic events and community and inclusion efforts.

Position Focus
Reporting dually to the Director of Strategic Initiatives (primary) and the Assistant Dean for Community and Inclusion (secondary), the Assistant Director leads and performs a broad range of projects and priorities related to strategic initiatives, focusing primarily on strategic events and community and inclusion efforts. These efforts include short and long-term planning, the evaluation and implementation of systems and resources to support these initiatives, and the creation of policies and procedures for best practices.

Principal Responsibilities
Strategic Event Management
  1. Partner with the Director of Strategic Initiatives to brainstorm, plan and implement strategic events for the School. Manages and oversees all logistics associated with speakers, lecture series, and events through the Dean’s office including environmental leadership series, research seminars, visiting speakers, environmental dialogues & additional events and programs as needed.
  2. Works with Curriculum Specialization Coordinators to develop, execute, and track specialization-related events.
  3. Serves as expert team lead to establish policies and procedures. Generates ideas for program development; develops related materials; creates and provides training; assesses and recommends departmental event support needs.
  4. Creates and oversees event database and tracking mechanisms to measure impacts of events, expenses, and other metrics that ensure quality events.
  5. Provides strategic and operational guidance to school-wide events and efforts related to strategic initiatives and diversity and inclusion (D&I).
  6. Develops and implements a communications plan for community and inclusion efforts to the Forestry & Environmental Sciences (F&ES) community. Collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Community and Inclusion and Director of Enrollment Management & Diversity Initiatives to create a monthly and/or quarterly newsletter. Manages the EQUID (Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Committee) email account, including serving as the first point of contact for D&I inquiries for the school.
  7. Provides guidance to faculty, staff, and students on issues related to diversity, inclusion, equity, and education. Facilitates efforts to devise, implement, and guide DE&I projects across multiple stakeholders/groups to impact F&ES community members, including working with faculty on creatively integrating diversity into the curricula. 
  8. Supports the work of the F&ES EQUID committee, including assisting in the organization and implementation of meetings and initiatives.
  9. Creates operational recommendations based on relevant data including best practices across Yale and other related programs as they pertain to diversity and inclusion efforts.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree and three years of experience in event management, diversity initiatives, or a related field, and/or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience
  1. Demonstrated interest and strong track record for enhancing/improving diversity, equality and inclusion efforts, including cultural competencies.
  2. Event management experience.  Database management experience.
  3. Cross cultural (intersectional and interdisciplinary) program planning experience.

  4. Advanced knowledge of standard software such as Excel, Adobe Illustrator, PowerPoint, Word and other presentation software (i.e. prezi).
