Avian Biodiversity Conservation in Cacao Agroforests in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia

The availability of foraging resources in agroforests may in part determine their potential to contribute to biodiversity conservation.  In a survey of bird diversity in mixed crop cacao agroforests in Southeast Sulawesi, the presence of frugivorous, seed dispersing bird species was highly correlated with the presence of fruiting fig trees.  The continued presence of these trees in the agricultural matrix, however, is complicated by local perceptions of these trees as undesirable for cultural and economic reasons.
