All CT Trout Unlimited Day at FES

Trout Unlimited's Connecticut chapters will be holding their annual meeting at FES on Saturday, February 17, 2007. Interested students are invited to attend.

The focus will be on youth education and outreach, and feature the "Trout in the Classroom" program.

Keynote speaker is CTDEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy.

Keynote Address–“Investing in the Future–Connecting Young People to the World Outdoors”

10:15 Session I Teachers are invited to participate in this session
Trout in the Classroom (“TIC”)
Rich Guarino with Rochelle Gandour, CT & NY State TIC Coordinators,
* TIC is about connecting students with the outdoors, their watersheds and clean water , ecosystem connectivity, and inspiring the conservation ethic.
* Students raise trout from eggs in fall and release them as juvenile fish into area streams in spring.
* TU provides tanks, chillers, and other equipment, eggs, feed, training, and assistance.
This session will–
* Inform teachers about TIC
* Connect teachers with sponsoring TU chapters in a brief break-out session following the presentation.

DEP’s CARE Program & Urban Fishing Program
– Tim Barry, DEP Inland Fisheries, Western Division
– Steve Butcher, TU member volunteer for CARE
With 400+ volunteer instructors–equaling 20 full time employees–CARE teaches the public how to fish. At a monetary value of almost $1,000,000 since its inception in 1987, CARE operates with minimal state funding. In 2006, under Tim Barry, City Fishing events were added, connecting 14,000 minority youth with the out-of-doors via the angling experience.

CT’s Proposed New Hunting/Fishing Licensing System
– Tim Barry, DEP Inland Fisheries, Western Division

The CT Legislature is "unveiling" a proposal for a new licensing structure. The structure involves licensing for salt water angling in addition to fresh water fishing and hunting. There are many possible benefits, including a new provision where DEP will receive some of the revenues to support fishing and hunting, whereas all proceeds now go into the Ct General Fund. Tim will give a PowerPoint presentation on what is proposed and why.

Youth Outreach Programs by individual Chapters
Ted Gardziel, President - Hammonasset Chapter Trout Unlimited
National Leadership Chair - CT Trout Unlimited
Hammonasset Chapter’s annual “Youth Ed. Day,” Nutmeg’s “Woolley Buggers,” and chapters providing volunteers to be Counselors for Boy Scouts’ Fly Fishing Merit Badge are some of the programs that individual CT TU chapters offer as youth outreach. Ted will summarize these programs and provide a forum for youth outreach idea sharing,

* Did you know there’s a wealth of material, tools, etc. that you can access via www.tu.org to help you achieve TU’s mission in your chapter?
* Liz headed up the development of this, called the “Tackle Box.”
* Learn what it is all about–it’s an “eye opener.”
Chapter Fundraising & TU Merchandise Offers
* LIZ---demonstration of our revamped chapter/ council fundraising (banquet) program. Liz Ogilvie will lead that session and discuss the new adjustments that have been made to the program, which has resulted in better service, products and prices.

Session VIII-B “TIC-TEC”--Trout in the Classroom Technical Exchange–Rich Guarino
* Chapter TIC coordinators will meet to share experiences on the technical aspects of running TIC programs.
