SDIS dinner with Sem Shikongo
SDIS presents Sem Shikongo (current Yale World Fellow):
Chief Development Planner, Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Government of
Namibia
As Deputy Director of Namibia?s Directorate of Environmental Affairs, Sem
Shikongo, 34, is responsible for Namibia's environmental programs and the
country?s obligations under multilateral agreements. He manages Namibia's
activities under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and
the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as the development and
implementation of the country?s ten-year national biodiversity strategy and
action plan, widely considered to be among the most effective in the developing
world. Shikongo has played a leading role in a number of international
environmental negotiations and has chaired several UN conferences relating to
conservation and sustainable development. Shikongo's efforts in biodiversity
conservation, combating desertification, and implementing environmental
agreements, are seen as crucial to sustainable development in Namibia, and a
model for Africa.
Sem has expressed an interest in meeting African students and those with an
interest in Africa-related issues. He is a fabulous resource and definitely not
to be missed!
