Botanical Research and Conservation in the Coastal Forests of Bahia, Brazil
Yale Forest Forum Leadership Seminar Lunch

Presented by:

Wayt Thomas, Ph.D.

Elizabeth G. Britton Curator of Botany, The New York Botanical Garden

Dr. Thomas' research is focused on plants of the American tropics, especially Brazil. His three primary interests are the plant diversity of Atlantic coastal Brazil, especially the coastal forests of the state of Bahia;
systematics of the Sedge family (Cyperaceae), especially the beaked-rushes (Rhynchospora); and the systematics of the Tree-of-Heaven family (Simaroubaceae and its segregate families, Picramniaceae and Surianaceae).

Systematic research provides a valuable foundation for conservation of biodiversity. To that end, Dr. Thomas' work in Bahia is made available to local conservation organizations and has had a significant impact on conservation in the region.
