Surveying For Endangered Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep

Summer Internship, 2006

2006 Student Internship
Maya Leonard-Cahn
Internship Host: California Department of Fish and Game, Sierra Nevada Region, CA

Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep are considered one of the rarest mammals in North America. Grazing, hunting, and habitat loss have driven this species to near extinction. As part of the recovery effort extensive surveys are conducted every summer in alpine summer ranges to document population numbers, group composition, and reproduction. This photo was taken on one of the survey trips conducted this year.
