“Vulnerability Exposed: Social Dimensions of Climate Change” is a world-wide competition
of 2-5 minute documentaries that highlight the social aspects of climate change as
experienced and/or observed by the film-maker(s). This short-documentary contest is a
follow-up to our landmark March 2008 International Workshop on the Social Dimensions of
Climate Change. The submitted films should innovatively illustrate the consequences of
climate change through one of the following theme categories: conflict, migration, the
urban space, rural institutions, drylands, social policy, indigenous peoples, gender,
governance, forests, and/or human rights.

The contest is open to anyone who wishes to have their voice heard. Unfortunately,
employees of the World Bank Group and their immediate families (spouse, parent, sibling,
child, and respective spouses) and those living in their immediate households, whether or
not related, of the World Bank Group are not eligible to enter the competition or win
awards. Even though you are not able to enter the competition to win awards, please spread
the word to your friends and non-immediate family members about this exciting contest.

There are two award categories: 1.) Social Dimensions of Climate Change Award (general
category) and 2.) Young Voices of Climate Change (youth category) Award. The general
category is open to both amateur and professional filmmakers; the youth category is open
to entries submitted by filmmakers who are under 24 years old. Award winners will be
chosen through a combination of public voting and a judging panel. The film with the most
public votes in each theme category will receive honorable mention. The Award Winners
will receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington, DC for a screening of their film and
will have the opportunity to attend a series of networking and learning events organized
by the Social Development Department of the World Bank in December, 2008.

The submission period ends on Friday, October 24, 2008. Please contact Megumi Makisaka

We define emerging leaders as those who are relatively new to the environmental and social justice fields with approximately three to ten years of experience. We define “environmental” broadly to include public health, transportation policy and planning, economic development, and broad-based community organizing.

Each year, our Regional Networks select a new class of fellows to join ELP’s community of environmental professionals from diverse backgrounds, sectors, and areas of expertise. The year-long program offers unique networking opportunities, intensive leadership and skills training, support, and time for personal and professional reflection. The Regional Fellowship provides an opportunity for talented individuals to have a unique and substantial impact on environmental progress in New England through collaboration with other emerging leaders.

Application Deadline: October 8, 2008

If it’s raining, we’re still gonna play. Just a note: FES soccer always seems to actually get goign 20-30 mins late, so this time, lets try for on-time?

otherwise, we’re there 4-630 usually, so if you’re running late, come down anyways.

Finally, our cap’tn Kate Boicourt needs your emails to put you on the listserv…so email her nicely (and remember she’s on vacation, so maybe hold off on the emials till the weekend)

her email is the normal yale.edu format…

~see yall on friday

ps - last time was awesome - we had 28 people show up and we had an amazing game!

Call for Research Assistants for study of Terrestrial Carbon Dynamics Under Bioenergy Production Systems

I am looking for two research assistants to work on separate but related projects. Each project requires an assessment of terrestrial carbon dynamics (biomass and soil) associated with land-use change resulting from different bioenergy systems in developing countries. One project is looking at fuelwood use in Honduras and is focused on the impacts of energy efficient woodstoves on forest cover. The second project explores changes in terrestrial carbon resulting from biofuel production on marginal lands in India and possibly Tanzania.

In addition to a research component, each position will be required to assist with the preparation of proposals, research reports, and presentations, as well as some administrative work related to each project. These positions are ideal for first year students. Each requires a year-long commitment and will ideally lead to MESc (or MEM) field work during in summer 2009. Interested second year students are also eligible to apply but must commit to summer work and some follow up in the Fall. Additional details for each project are provided below…

1. Assessing LUC impacts in an improved stove intervention in Honduras

Exposure to smoke from fuelwood is one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death in the developing world. The primary way to reduce health impacts is to introduce improved stoves to rural communities. This technological change also reduces the carbon footprint of fuelwood use. However, emission reductions are sensitive to wood harvesting practices among rural communities as well as numerous other factors affecting forest conditions. Case-by-case analyses are required to understand how forest carbon stocks respond to changes in household energy technology. The RA will help to develop a methodology to assess how changes in woodfuel consumption affect forest cover. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of remote sensing and GIS methods and be fluent or near-fluent in Spanish. Experience with forest survey methods and social surveys is also a plus, as is experience working in rural areas of developing countries.

2. Carbon Dynamics in biofuel production

Biofuels are promoted as a way to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector worldwide. However, recent research has raised concerns over the land use and food security impacts of biofuel cultivation. This has led to the promotion of non-food crops on degraded land. Jatropha curcas is an inedible oil-bearing shrub that can grow on marginal land. A recent survey estimates 900,000 ha of Jatropha has already been planted worldwide, primarily in Asia. However, little is known about the carbon dynamics associated with Jatropha production. This research project will develop a model based on empirical data that determine the carbon dynamics of land used for Jatropha cultivation. The output of this work will contribute to a full life cycle assessment of GHG emissions. Research will be based in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which currently hosts over 100,000 ha of Jatropha cultivation. Additional work in Tanzania is also a possibility. The ideal candidate will have strong working knowledge of remote sensing and GIS methods and experience with forest survey methods and carbon stock assessment. Experience working in India or other developing countries is a plus.

Both positions ideally involve a year-long commitment for 5-10 hr/wk. Salary will be at Level 2-4 for Student Employees (defined by the university). Field research during the 2009 summer months is also required. Interested students should submit their resume and cover letter to robert.bailis@yale.edu with the subject heading “Carbon Forest RA Position”. Applications must be received by Sept 12, 2008. Be sure to indicate in the cover letter which of the two positions you’d like to be considered for. If you’d like to be considered for both, indicate which, if either, is your preferred choice.

We have a great apartment in East Rock that will be available in December. This would not be a sublet but a 6 month lease, with the option to extend for another year. The apartment is a fantastic one bedroom. It has a huge kitchen, hardwood floors, lots of light, plenty of area for a garden in the front or on the sides, very low utility costs (usually only $40 a month, even in the winter!), plenty of parking, and the neighborhood is great. Rent is $950. No pets.

Hi all,

Just wanted to get the word out to all new students about some really great pick up games in the East Rock area for anyone inclined to toward sports played with flat circular objects. If you’re new to the game, but interested in learning more, feel free to come out. All playing abilities are welcome, and veteran players are more than happy to teach rules and give pointers.
Here’s the website to sign up for the weekly pick up mailing list. There are both Yale-affiliated and non-Yale people on the list. The moderator is Sachin Desai, so you’ll get a lot of emails from him about whether or not that day’s game is on:
http://mailman.yale.edu/mailman/listinfo/ultimate

Since collating everyone’s RSVP emails in the past has been a time consuming task for the moderator, the group is trying out a new online spreadsheet sign up system. Check it out here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pEzay4RTULxrr5r4cBEVOew&hl=en. Generally if there are 6-8 people signed up on the sheet, game is on since a lot of people never RSVP. If 6 people sign up, the actual yield is generally 12-16.

Games have been on pretty much 4 times a week for the summer (Tues/Thurs at 6p, Sat at 10a and Sun at 3p), not sure how that’s going to change once the semester starts. Games are usually at Rice Fields (go all the way down Orange towards East Rock, take a right when the road ends and follow the road all the way to the baseball/soccer fields). Saturday games are in College Woods, where the urban/admin mods had the barbeque last night.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me (lesley dot yen at yale dot edu). Hope to see you out on the fields sometime!

~Lesley

For those of you who are in a bad rent or simply prefer a more rural setting than New Haven, I have a fully furnished 600 S.F. in-law apartment with a separate entrance in my home in Branford. It is the perfect size for one person or couple. It is a relatively simple 10-mile commute into New Haven. It is also the first stop on the Shoreline East Rail Line (with free parking) if you prefer not having to drive/park into New Haven. This is an opportunity to still experience Yale and the City of New Haven, and also enable you to enjoy the benefits of living in an idyllic New England shore community. The apartment is $950/month and includes heat, electric, water, and TV. Either a full or academic year rental is available. Sorry, no pets or smokers.

If we have not had the opportunity to meet, I am a native New Havener who lives in Branford with my family. I am a first year student and I am fulfilling a life-long dream in attending Yale, pursuing an MEM as a half-time student. I’ll be seeing some of you at our last MOD at Yale-Myers next week, and look forward to a great week of trees, camping, and PBR’s.

If you are interested and would like to see the apartment, please send me an email to firstname.lastname at yale.edu or call my cell (203) 437-0379.

Several of us are planing to have a party this sunday at 189 Mansfield Street. Everyone is welcome and encouraged - first years, second years, PHDs, TAs, Faculty, Professors, non-FES roommates, non-Yale friends, significant others and the like. We are going to try and grab two kegs tomorrow, but I have no sense about how many are going to show, so you may want to consider a BYOB tactic or at least bring a few bucks for those of us paying for the beer. Its a fairly big house with a nice back yard, good times should be had by all. Feel free to call me with any questions.
Hope to see you all there!

The Urban Resources Initiative (URI) is seeking FES students to work as environmental education interns this fall in New Haven Public Schools.

URI’s Open Spaces as Learning Places program teaches New Haven sixth grade public school students about environmental stewardship through the exploration of New Haven open spaces. The Open Spaces program offers Yale students an internship opportunity in teaching place-based environmental education.
This fall semester we are looking for two to four Education Interns. Education Interns co-teach the Open Spaces program with URI’s Education Coordinator. Interns will work closely with the students and classroom teachers of local schools. The program contains both in-class lessons and field trips that give students an understanding of the role open spaces play in their community. Through the Open Spaces curriculum, students will explore their school grounds, a reclaimed abandoned lot, a city park, a river, a pond and a cemetery over a nine-week period.

TIME COMMITMENT/Pay etc:
Ideally, the intern will teach four classes each week (ie four 90 minute lessons per week), and four hours weekly for lesson preparation. Thus the time commitment for the internships is 10 hours per week, and the pay rate is $13.30 per hour. The program will run from September 14th through Thanksgiving.

If you are interested in applying for this internship please SUBMIT A LETTER OF INTEREST, RESUME, AND WEEKLY FALL SCHEDULE/AVAILABILITY TO TEACH to URI Education Coordinator Mira.Manickam@yale.edu. Also, include times available to meet for an interview during the week of September 8th.

Meet other enviro-friendly folks, find out what enviro stuff is going on in New Haven, laugh, learn how to dress yourself, drink a beer (or ginger ale), and get emotional. Note: YOU DO NOT NEED TO DRINK ALCOHOL TO COME TO THIS EVENT!

Join us tonight Wednesday, August 20th and get your mojo on from 6:00-8:00pm at Geronimo, 271 Crown Street, New Haven, CT, (203) 777-7700.

This month we will hear from Citizens Campaign for the Environment. CCE works to build widespread citizen understanding and advocacy for policies and actions designed to manage our natural resources and public health. And guess what? Geronimo will be giving us some free snacks! Mmmmm. But that’s just the beginning! If you dress up like a leprechaun you can bet your lucky charms I’ll be buying you a drink or two.

Don’t drink? Don’t worry! You can buy Seltzer water or Shirley Temples! Everyone is welcome, even your Mom.

Remember to walk, bike, Yale Shuttle or GPS to the event.

See you there … unless it’s past your bedtime…

Class size: limit 25. Registration is on a first-come, first served basis.

The Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program is based on mindfulness meditation: tuning into the breath, and learning to experience life more fully as it unfolds moment by moment.

This is an 8 week course. It includes instruction the body scan, hatha yoga, sitting meditation, walking meditation, eating meditation, as well as mindfulness of interpersonal communication and other activities of daily life. This course is modeled on the nationally acclaimed Stress Reduction Clinic developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.

There are two goals of this course: to develop a daily meditation practice in order to more effectively handle academic, professional and personal stress; and to explore mindfulness meditation as a health care modality. The required text “Full Catastrophe Living” by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is available at the Yale Medical Co-op on York Street. A set of two required cassette tapes or CDs are available from the course instructor.

Instructor Beth Roth, MSN, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this program. She is a bilingual nurse practitioner with many years’ experience as a health care provider and meditation instructor. She teaches meditation to patients with chronic and life-threatening illness and is a meditation consultant to hospitals, health centers, schools and other organizations throughout Connecticut.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an experiential course. Please make a sincere commitment to attend all class sessions and to devote 30 minutes per day, 6 days per week, to practicing the meditation techniques at home. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring to the first class a foam pad or blanket and $5.30 (check or cash) for the first cassette tape ($7.95 for CD). For more information, please contact YSN Student Affairs Office at 785-2389 or contact Beth Roth (203) 772-2335 or .

Did you know that the City of New Haven is actually a coastal city?! Most people don’t realize this exciting fact because 1-95 separates us from the Long Island Sound - genius idea. But it’s true, there’s a rich history of tall ships, fishing, shell fishing, and even pirating (exactly like the Pirates of the Caribbean-ok slight exaggeration).

Join us Tuesday at 5PM to revitalize our maritime culture and to get to know one of the many local beaches, Sandy Point Beach in West Haven (three minute drive), oh yeah and swim, tan, play Frisbee, sing, and be merry. Directly across from the beach is a great restaurant/bar called Captain’s Galley to aid our beach bash festivity.

For those wishing to carpool please meet at

783 Orange Street

at 5PM. All others, see directions below.

After the sandy fun we can all head to Seth and Jen’s for Mojito’s.

Note: If the weather does not hold we will have to postpone : (

Second Note: Because the beach is near a wetland and intertidal flat you can see great CT wildlife around sunset and there’s a chance of seeing horseshoe crabs spawning. It’s the very very end of their season but they’ve been there everytime I’ve gone : )

Directions: Take I-95 South to exit 44. Turn slight right onto Kimberly Avenue. Take a left onto First Avenue. First Avenue becomes Beach Street. Sandy Point will be on your left. Captain’s Galley is on the right.

Cheers!
