Share your yard with my Tiny House?

This summer, I’m building a 144 sf house on wheels that will be my primary residence at FES.  It’s my own design and has a sleeping loft, an office/workspace, a composting toilet, solar power and a small kitchen.  I’m building it with the most environmentally-considerate materials I can find, and in a series of burgers-and-barnraising-style building parties with family, friends & community.  I’m having a hilarious time.  The project has been picked up by several newspapers here north of Boston, so folks all over are following the progress in 2-week installments.  Here is the first of the series:

So, I’m headed to New Haven on August 9 for MODS and I’m exploring spaces to park.  The trailer itself is 8′ x 18′, like
a lovely wooden RV.  I’m looking for a single or multi-family home near FES where I can park and share a bathroom and occasionally communal space as if I were another roommate.  In exchange, I am happy to do chores and/or pay a fee - we can negotiate the rent as this evolves.  Also, the structure is framed directly to a trailer and is therefore mobile, so if you want to try this out for a couple of months, I’m open to a short-term arrangement.

I’ve been in conversation with New Haven’s Zoning and Health departments.  They are OK with this, provided there’s a reasonably-sized backyard or driveway and the neighbors are down.

I’m almost 26, a grad of Colby College ‘04 and now working with a design/build firm after a year and a half of leading trips around the world.  I like road biking, hiking and fiddling with the built environment.  Clean, curious and intelligent,  I’m generally fun to have around.  If you think your place might be right, or if you have any questions or ideas, please call 978.758.1051 or send an email: turnbull.e@gmail.com.

And if you’re in the Boston area and want to come build some weekend I would love love love to have you and no prior experience is necessary.  I can host you and feed you and give you a hammer..  The last three building weekends are:  July 12/13, July 26/27 and August 2/3.

Thanks!

Elizabeth
