This is a heads up for a new breed of race - the Men’s Health Urbanathlon **OPEN to WOMEN AND MEN**, held in New York (Sep 29th) and Chicago (Oct 20th). Contestants can race solo or as part of 3 person team. The race is about 7.5 miles, through the heart of the city, with man-made and natural obstacles - marine training hurdles, walls, taxis, tall buildings, etc.. Unfortunately, the registration deadline for the NYC race has already passed, so my plans for organizing a team have been cut short. However, I thought it might be of interest for some of you, and without mods interfering with deadlines I will have a team for next year.

The Yale Peabody Museum, along with Yale’s Marsh Botanic Garden ( www.yale.edu/marshgardens/) and the New England Wild Flower Society (www.newfs.org/), offers botanical and horticultural courses, and field trips to outstanding local sites. Registration is required; space is limited. To register contact (203) 432-3775 or peabody.adultprograms@yale.edu. Goldenrod Identification Workshop Saturday, September 8 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Goldenrods (Solidago and Euthamia) comprise a substantial proportion of the late-summer and fall-blooming herbaceous flora of our region, and hence are an important group to know. Most people would agree that the goldenrods are famous for being difficult to identify, but they are not impossible. The number of “distinct” species (not including hybrids) found in our region is relatively small - smaller than the number of so-called “aster” species. This workshop will focus on identifying 15-20 of the most common species - the ones most likely to be found in the wild, most of the time, in most locations. A field trip will follow a two-hour lab. Bring hand lens, bag lunch, and sturdy hiking shoes. Co-sponsored with the New England Wild Flower Society. Leader: Arieh Tal, naturalist Fee: $50 Members/$60 Non-members Aster Identification Workshop Saturday, September 22 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm For many years, asters have been among the most challenging species of native plants to identify in the field, for both professionals and amateurs. There are several genera and many species in New England, including hybrids. Traditional field guides have proven to be inadequate for identifying asters, in part because they lack sufficient detail, and their nomenclature has not been updated to reflect recent research. Nevertheless, they comprise a substantial proportion of the late-summer and fall-blooming herbaceous flora of our region, and hence are an important group to know. Last night a new grad student was attacked only a few steps from Campus Housing on Prospect St. by the Divinity School. He was badly beat up but the two assailants did not ask for or take any money. It’s apparent that these guys targeted someone just to beat up. All this occured around 8pm while the student was on his way to meet up with a friend.
