Today is Critical Mass Day: 5:30 at the Green. I am soooo going, but I would love to have compatriots!! We will ride and then cruise to TGIF. I’ll be in front of Sage at 5:15, leaving promptly at … 5:17. Critical Mass is a “movement” involving m a n y bikers taking over the roads for a short short ride. I seem to have lost my little Nokia phone sometime today. It’s square, not a fliptop, has really small keys on the front under a rather large display screen. The general color is a silverish metal. Please send me an email (don’t call!) if you find it. I’ll be eternally grateful.

To any other runners out there who are dismayed by all the recent news of assaults on runners and the lack of safety around town - are any of you interested in forming a running club? This would be very relaxed and open to people of all different paces and ambitions; I was thinking we could head out of town once a week (maybe Saturdays) to find nice runs in places other than New Haven, and then maybe set up a few other purely optional times during the week to run around here. This would give us a fairly large pool of people to get in touch with when interested in running - obviously we wouldn’t all have to go out running in a large pack, but it would be nice to just have a list of who runs, and to explore the area outside New Haven. For anyone with an eye on marathon training this winter, I know there are also a couple of people who are interested in doing that, and it really helps to have other people to help get you through those long runs on freezing January and February mornings. We could also head up and do a long run on part of the Boston Marathon course at some point, if anyone is REALLY serious about marathon training.

If you are woefully out of shape or have no basketball skills or experience to speak of, do not worry - you are still invited… to watch the real ballers get down and dirty on the courts. If numbers permit, we may have a little 1st year vs. 2nd year matchup. If you have no idea where the gym is, or want to contract me for personal lessons, email Christopher (the curly one) at christopher.clement@yale.edu.

For anyone who has never before experienced the beautiful New England autumn, or for those who have and just love it and want to get out into the countryside to see some foliage, I’m planning a trip up to New Hampshire for Saturday, October 8th. My cousins have a dairy farm and sugar house outside of Keene, New Hampshire; it’s a classic, picturesque farm with classic, picturesque black-and-white cows. The sugar house is a restaurant where they make maple syrup and serve pancakes, corn fritters, and other homemade goodies; there are syrup-making demonstrations so you can see the process, and my cousins are very friendly people who would be happy to talk to anyone interested in agriculture. Vermont is just over the river from the farm, and there are some lovely covered bridges in the vicinity, as well as a couple of organic vegetable farms and lots of other farms making and selling cheese, honey, and other goods. The foliage is already starting to look good up there, and will probably be really nice by the 8th.
