Getting Around by Bike

Many students find that a bicycle is the ideal way to get around New Haven. The city is relatively compact and centralized, making almost any point in town only a 10 or 15 minute ride away. Riding a bike is also a great form of carbon-neutral transportation.

Bike Routes
The New Have Bike Route Map (Front and Back) details a number of good routes through the city.

The New Haven Green Map contains a number of bike routes, as well as sites of environmental significance throughout the city.

The Connecticut Statewide Bicycle Map shows bike routes that run throughout the state. Free paper copies can be requested from the map website.

Bike Storage
Most Yale buildings and almost all FES buildings have bike racks. Locking bikes to railings is prohibited. There is under-cover bike storage at the main entrance to the Kline Geology Laboratory (map) and in the basement of Kline Biology Tower (map). Both to prevent theft and weather damage, it is recommended that you store your bike indoors at home.

Bike Shops
The Devil's Gear and College Street Cycles are the two bike shops located within the City of New Haven. Both are a short bike ride from F&ES.

Amity Bike (map) is located just outside New Haven in Woodbridge.

Zane's Cycles is located in the nearby town of Branford.

Bike Repair
In addition to the bike shops listed above, all of which perform repairs, there is a bike toolbox available for checkout in the F&ES library that contains a pump, tire levers, tube patch kits, an allen wrench set, a chain tool, and a chain brush.

Bike Safety
New Haven law requires all cyclists to ride in the street, where they have all the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, including stopping at red lights and stop signs, and signaling turns. Riding on the sidewalk is illegal. Although not legally required for adults, it is strongly recommended that everyone wear a helmet at all times when riding. Everyone is required to have flashing lights on the front and back of their bikes when riding after dark. For information on how to share the road with cars, see this brochure. For more information on bike laws, see this brochure.
