Applying to the Master’s Program

Instructions

PRIORITY APPLICATION DEADLINE: the application must be submitted electronically by midnight on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.

Individual application files completed by the priority deadline are guaranteed to receive a review by the Committee on Admissions. Applications and supplemental materials may still be submitted after this date, but no guarantee is given that they will be considered by the committee. Therefore we encourage serious applicants to submit all necessary materials to the Office of Admissions prior to the January deadline.

Application Requirements

  • Completed application form.
  • Personal statement (NO MORE THAN 600 WORDS).
    • describe your career objectives and how Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies can help you achieve them.
    • include other considerations that explain why you seek admission to the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.
  • Supplemental statements (NO MORE THAN 300 WORDS) are required from one-year mid-career program applicants, applicants required to take the TOEFL or IELTS, and five-year program applicants (current Yale College undergraduates) only.
  • Résumé or curriculum vitae.
    • Please include dates of service, employers, titles, nature of duties, and any significant volunteer experience.
    • List also original research work, reports, or publications. Please do not send hard copies of these; they will be neither read nor returned.
  • Three letters of reference.
    • Letters from individuals who can evaluate the applicant's scholarship, professional activities, leadership skills, and career goals are especially valuable.
    • Letters from undergraduate professors and/or professional supervisors are preferred. Letters from family, friends or nonsupervisory colleagues are not acceptable.
    • The submission of the recommendation form and a one-page letter is expected.
  • Official transcripts.
    • A four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the international equivalent is required to apply to Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.
    • International applicants with a three-year degree from an accredited institution are eligible to apply.
    • An electronic copy of each transcript from every college or university you have ever attended must be uploaded to your online application.
    • IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT MAIL UNOFFICIAL PAPER COPIES OF TRANSCRIPTS OR GRADE REPORTS TO THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE
    • You do not need to submit official, paper transcripts to apply. If admitted, however, you will need to submit official transcripts before enrolling. All offers of admission are conditional on the receipt and verification of official transcripts.
    • If admitted, you will be required to submit official transcripts for all registered coursework from each college or university you have attended. Official transcripts must be submitted in sealed and signed envelopes from the registrar or designated school records officer. For international institutions issuing no such documents, send attested diplomas or certificates. Official (notarized) English translations are required for academic records and transcripts not published in English. A certified translation of the diploma certificate must also be provided if the transcript does not include the date of graduation and the type of degree awarded.
  • Official GRE, GMAT or LSAT score report.
    • GRE (www.gre.org) and GMAT (www.mba.com/mba) scores must be sent directly from the official testing service and generally arrive two to three weeks after the examination date. Copies sent by applicants will not be accepted. Please plan testing so that scores will arrive by the January application deadline.
    • The GRE institution code is 3996; there is no department code.
    • The GMAT institution code is 3TJ-WT-45.
    • Applicants taking the LSAT (www.lsac.org) should be aware that LSAC does not send score reports to schools other than law. If you take the LSAT, you must contact the Office of Admissions or Registrar’s Office at a law school to which you have applied and ask that they fax a copy of the report to Master’s Admissions, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies: 203-432-7297.
  • Official TOEFL and IELTS test score reports.
    • You must take the TOEFL or IELTS exam and submit official scores if (1) your native language is not English or (2) if English was not your primary language of instruction at your degree-granting undergraduate or graduate institution.
    • For the TOEFL & IELTS, the institution code is 3996; there is no department code.
    • Copies or reproductions of test scores sent by an applicant will not be accepted by Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. Score reports must be sent directly from the testing service.
    • Minimum TOEFL and IELTS scores required are:  TOEFL score of at least 100 (Internet Based Test) or an IELTS score of at least 7.
  • Application fee.
    • $75.00 must be submitted by credit card or electronic transfer via the on-line process.

Review Process

The School looks for students capable of making effective contributions to scientific knowledge or to professional service in addressing environmental problems. Special weight is given to relevant experiences after graduation from college. Clarity regarding professional career goals is a critically important part of the applicant's personal statement. Faculty review teams read the applications submitted to the master’s degree programs. Final admissions decisions rest on an integrated assessment of the components described above. Admissions decisions are announced in mid-March.

Reapplying to Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies

Previous applicants planning to reapply to Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies must submit an updated application form and pay the current application fee.

Applicants reapplying to the Master’s program must also submit:

  • updated résumé/curriculum vitae.
  • transcripts depicting all academic work not included in the previous application.
  • one new recommendation letter.
  • any other credentials required to complete the application file.

All previously submitted application materials held by the Office of Admissions will be incorporated with the new application form. Application materials are kept on file for two years by the Office of Admissions.
