The Yale Center Beijing is providing the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) an opportunity to further develop its collaborations and partnerships in China, including strengthening the dual degree program with China’s Tsinghua University that was launched last year.
On Oct. 20, 2015 at the Beijing center F&ES will hold a workshop on urban climate. This workshop addresses this twin challenge for cities: mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and local climate effects. The workshop brings together researchers and practitioners at the forefront of the science and solutions of urban climate mitigation. Panelists will explore potential solutions and gaps in the science, and seek scalable solutions. View the full agenda
Along with this engaging workshop, F&ES will host an alumni and prospective student reception on October 19.
A hub for Yale’s leadership development activities, the center has been designed with advanced technological capabilities to connect Beijing with New Haven and other locations around the world. Located in the Chaoyang District of China’s capital, the 16,500-square-foot center serves as a convening space and intellectual hub for leaders, scholars, and students to pursue a wide range of issues affecting China, the United States, and the world, including healthcare, global warming, technology, the economy, and the arts. The center hosts a year-round series of workshops, meetings, classes, and other events developed by Yale schools and programs in collaboration with partners in China.
Today, more international students at Yale come from China than any other country. Yale has also continued to grow the range of programs related to China over the past decade, including the China-Yale Advanced Leadership Program for University Presidents; the China-Yale Senior Government Leadership Programs; executive education programs for Chinese provincial and municipal environmental officials at F&ES; and the Law School’s China Center.

Workshop on Urban Climate: From Science to Solutions
Urban areas account for more than 70 percent of global fossil fuel CO2 emissions. If the top 50 emitting cities were a single country, its emissions would rank third globally, behind China and the U.S. While cities contribute to a large percentage of global greenhouse gas emissions, they are also global hotspots: they modify their local climates and cities are prone to increasing temperatures. High temperatures in city centers increase risk and vulnerability of urban residents.A symposium being held in Beijing on Oct. 20 addresses this twin challenge for cities: mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and local climate effects. The event will bring together researchers and practitioners at the forefront of the science and solutions of urban climate mitigation and explore potential solutions and gaps in the science, and seek scalable solutions.
