A new educational tool in the field of tropical forest restoration

Internal F&ES Competition: Sabin Fellowship Applications Being Accepted

February 8, 2012 — Applications from current F&ES masters students, who entered in academic year 2011-2012, are now being accepted for the Andrew Sabin International Environmental Fellowship. Road Runoff Spurring Spotted Salamander Evolution

January 31, 2012 — Spotted salamanders exposed to contaminated roadside ponds are adapting to their toxic environments, according to a Yale paper in Scientific Reports. This study provides the first documented evidence that a vertebrate has adapted to the negative effects of roads apparently by evolving rapidly.

Tropical Cyclones to Cause Greater Damage

January 31, 2012 — Tropical cyclones will cause $109 billion in damages by 2100, according to Yale and MIT researchers in a paper published in Nature Climate Change.

Switzerland Ranks at Top of 2012 Environmental Performance Index; Latvia Takes #1 Spot in New Trend EPI Rankings

January 26, 2012 — Switzerland leads the world in addressing pollution control and natural resource management challenges, according to the 2012 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) produced by researchers at Yale and Columbia Universities in collaboration with the World Economic Forum. Latvia, Norway, Luxembourg, and Costa Rica round out the top five positions in the 2012 EPI, which ranks 132 countries based on 22 indicators across ten major policy categories including air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity, and forest management.

Yale to Hold Conference on Tropical Forests

From January 26 to 28, the Yale chapter of the International Society of Tropical Foresters will host practitioners and researchers from government, academia, and environmental and development institutions to discuss ways to implement large-scale initiatives that would restore forests and human livelihoods. The three-day conference will take place in Kroon Hall.

First Independent Review of Provincial-level Environmental Data in China

December 19, 2011 — A team of researchers led by Yale University and Columbia University have released a report that introduces a framework for assessing China’s environmental management and performance. This analysis offers the first independent review of Chinese provincial-level environmental performance by international researchers.

Yale Graduates Receive Heinz Award

December 13, 2011 — Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, leading advocates in the sustainable food movement and Yale graduates, are co-recipients of a Heinz Award. The two 31-year-olds are the youngest-ever recipients of a Heinz Award. They will share an unrestricted $100,000 award, according to the Heinz Family Foundation.

November 18, 2011 — The Banana Tree at the Gate: The History of Marginal Peoples and Global Markets in Borneo, published by Yale University Press, has been awarded the 2011 Julian Steward Award by the anthropology and environment section of the American Anthropological Association for the best monograph in environmental anthropology.

Deforestation Causes Cooling in Northern U.S., Canada

November 16, 2011 — Deforestation, considered by scientists to contribute significantly to global warming, has been shown by a Yale-led team to actually cool the local climate in northern latitudes, according to a paper published today in Nature.

$5.5 Million for Yale Reforestation Program

November 15, 2011 — A Yale program that aims to restore tropical forests and the livelihoods that depend on them has received a six-year, $5.5 million grant by the Arcadia Fund to continue its work in Latin America and Southeast Asia.

U.S. Rivers and Streams Saturated With Carbon

October 17, 2011 — The researchers assert that a significant amount of carbon contained in land, which first is absorbed by plants and forests through the air, is leaking into streams and rivers and then released into the atmosphere before reaching coastal waterways.

F&ES Revamps Its Most Popular Master’s Program

September 9, 2011 — The faculty recently grouped the electives into eight areas, called specializations, to make students aware of the variety of courses offered at F&ES and elsewhere at Yale and to help them marry their coursework to their interests, experience and near-term career objectives. The faculty had their own interests in mind, too. The specializations will assist them in advising students and in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the program.
