The Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies convened an esteemed group of leaders representing the natural sciences, social sciences, philosophy, communications, education, religion, ethics, public policy, business, philanthropy, history, the creative arts, and the humanities, to examine the role of cultural values and worldviews in environmentally destructive behavior in modern, affluent societies. The conference worked to diagnose the values underlying the interlinked global environmental and social crises and suggest ways to help catalyze a value shift toward a more sustainable and enriching relationship with the natural world.
A report, “Toward a New Consciousness: Values to Sustain Human and Natural Communities,” synthesizes the insights and recommendations from the conference. It is available as a PDF here or as a print copy from the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies Publication Series Order List. An article about the conference appeared in the Spring 2008 issue of the Journal of the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Environment Yale.
