Jennifer Balch, Ph.D. ’08, a lead author of a recent Science article on fire, sets a fire line for a 123.5-acre (50-hectare) experimental burn at her field site near Canarana, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Information from the burn will be used to predict when and where other Amazon wildfires will occur. Balch says, “The idea of frequent large-scale fires in the tropical rainforest used to be unthinkable. Now we’re seeing several large fires every decade.”
