Summer Internship Guidelines for Employers and Host Organizations

Background
All master's degree candidates at our School are required to undertake an internship or research project during the summer between academic years. The Office works very closely with academic programs at the School [for instance, Tropical Resources Institute, Yale Forest Forum, Center for Coastal and Watershed Systems, Center for Environmental Law and Policy, Urban Resources Initiative, Center for BioDiversity Conservation and Science, Industrial Environmental Management (IEM), and Yale/UNDP Public-Private Partnerships] to share information that results in students and employers/hosts being brought together quickly for discussions about mutual needs.

Timeframe
Students often commit themselves early in the Spring Semester to summer opportunities. For your organization to be competitive, we suggest that you try to follow this timeframe. By January 1st, post your announcement with the CDO (see posting instructions below). There are a few small internship funds that require a letter of commitment from the employer/ host agency before they will consider making awards to our students. Please complete the selection process early enough so the students can meet mid February and early March deadlines for these funds.

Financial Support for Students
Our master's degree students have significant educational and professional work experience prior to attending Yale F&ES. Internships should provide the students with a challenging and rewarding experience, which includes the opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to specific projects. It is our hope that students are compensated appropriately for their internship and that no students who are already investing a lot in their education costs will need to fall further behind during the summer when they are interning. As a goal, we hope that each student can receive a minimum of $5,000 for a 10-week internship in stipends, wages, room and board, and transportation. If an NGO employer/host is unable to support a student to this extent, we ask that they actively assist the student in applying for independent funding sources to augment what they can offer.

Internship Posting Instructions
Use our Global eRecruiting Outreach (GeO) Program to post your internship announcements, receive student resumes, and set up interviews at Yale F&ES or elsewhere. To learn more about the GeO Program and register to gain access where you can publish all the pertinent information that will inform and attract applicants from our School, please visit the CDO website at http://environment.yale.edu/374/careers/

Please email us at fescareers@yale.edu for GeO password and/or username problems or general inquiries.
