Sample Career Development Curriculum

The below is a guide for a career development curriculum. Individual needs will vary depending on your experience, skills and interests, but we do recommend that you draft a plan for yourself for your time at F&ES.
First semester
• Start internship search in September--identify potential employers/projects, discuss with faculty members and CDO
• Develop a list of 10 potential internships
• Attend Jumpstarting the Job Search Program (resume, cover letter, networking, interviewing workshops)
• Attend Applying for the Phd Program (if thinking about this)
• Attend Alumni Career Panels in areas of interest
• University-wide Career Fair (EARLY September, over 80 employers on campus)
• Complete Job Search Skills Self-Assessment and Schedule appointment with CDO
• Work with Peer Career Adviser, submit resume for resume book by November 1
• GeO Workshop; upload resume to GeO; set up GeO alerts
• Attend Internships Showcase
• 2 PSM offerings


Second semester
• Duke-Yale Environmental Career Fair (over 40 employers, approx 350 individual and small group interview opportunities)
• Initiate Informational Interviews with Professionals and Alumni
• All-Ivy Career Fair (over 75 environmental and sustainability employers)
• Summer Funding Information Session (for internships)
• Apply for Supplemental Summer Funding
• Success Stories: Job and Internship Search Strategies
• 2 PSM offerings


First Summer
Degree Requirement: Complete Internship, other employment or research directly related to course of study


Third semester
• Start job search in September--identify potential employers/projects, discuss with faculty members and CDO
• Develop a list of 10 potential employers
• Complete Job Search Skills Self-Assessment and Schedule appointment with CDO
• Initiate Informational Interviews with Professionals and Alumni
• Attend Alumni Career Panels in areas of interest
• Attend Jumpstarting the Job Search Program (resume, cover letter, networking, interviewing workshops)
• University-wide Career Fair (EARLY September, over 80 employers on campus)
• Attend Federal Career Month Programs and information sessions in Oct/Nov
• Revise resume to include summer internship/research and submit for resume book by November 1
• Attend Writing the Personal Statement Workshop
• Update resume to GeO
• Duke Yale Career Fair and Alumni Reception
• Panelist in Domestic or International Internships Showcase to share your experience with first year students
• Yale Career Network Information Session
• Professional Conference Presenter
• 2 PSM offerings

Fourth semester
• Participate in Job Search Discussion Group
• Initiate Informational Interviews with Professionals and Alumni
• Salary Negotiations Workshop
• Panelist for Success Stories: Job and Internship Search Strategies
