Resume Book
2010 Resume Book
CDO produces an annual resume book to distribute to employers. The publication includes general information regarding our programs and qualifications of our students, and includes resumes of graduating students and students looking for summer internships. This is an excellent way to get your resume distributed widely, as it goes to employers beyond those registered in GeO*. Submitting a resume for the book is highly recommended!
Any student who wishes to be included must create a one-page resume in OptimalResume Review Center by November 1.
Please note that you can NOT upload a document to OptimalResume, you must actually create your resume using the technology.
1) Create a draft of your resume that highlights your experience and education.
2) Seek review by CDO staff and Peer Career Advisors.
3) Create a one-page resume using the OptimalResume Yale Resume Book template.
4) Submit your one-page resume for review through the Review Center on OptimalResume by November 1 (due to the logistics involved in creating the resume book, there will be no exceptions to this deadline). IMPORTANT NOTE: This review is meant to focus on format and minor discrepancies. PLEASE have a more in-depth review of your resume completed BEFORE submission.
5) Make necessary revisions as per response from CDO through Review Center on OptimalResume (responses will come between November 2 and 10).
6) Submit finalized resume through OptimalResume Review Center by November 14.
For general information on resume writing, see Job Application Materials.
* IMPORTANT: You will also want to post your resume on GeO in the appropriate folder (or multiple folders) for the many employers who have direct access to GeO.

FAQs
Q: Should I submit to the resume book? A: Yes! Submission is recommended for all students.
Q: Will I get a thorough review of my resume by submitting it through the OR review center? A: NO! Please have your resume reviewed by CDO and Peer Career Advisors before submitting to OR review center. CDO will be reviewing 120-160 resumes in a one week period for formatting issues and minor suggestions only. Thank you in advance!
Q: What is the resume book, and who sees it? A: The resume book is a collection of FES students seeking jobs and internships which is distributed to faculty, staff, alumni and employers. It is an excellent way to get your resume out in the larger FES community and to our extensive network of employers.
Q: Why does it have to be in the specified format and built through OptimalResume? A: A uniform book is easier for employers to read, and OR is the tool CDO uses to streamline the process of producing the book. Many conferences and professional organizations use a similar system to make resume books, and it is a great thing to learn!
Q: Should my Career Objective include short and long term goals? A: No! The career objective section should reflect your short-term goals towards a summer internship or first job out of FES upon graduation only. We recommend for students seeking internships that you write, "Seeking an internship in..." For students graduating in 2010, "Seeking a full time position in..." The objective does not have to be super-specific, but could include sectors of interest, locations of interest.
Q: Do students get contacted by employers as a result of being in the resume book? A: Yes!
Q: Will my resume be published publicly? A: No. We send the book to employers by request, and in-house to faculty, staff and alumni. The book is also shared with colleagues and new students on a limited basis to help others with examples.
Q: How do I trim my resume to one page? A: For some students with lots of experience, publications or education, some hard choices have to made for this book. We suggest that you focus on your most current and relevant experience, particularly as it relates to your short-term career goals. Often a 2-page resume is perfectly appropriate for our students, so you may typically use a 2-pager for applications. However, for consistency sake, please use a one-page resume for the resume book.
Q: Should I upload and publish my resume to GeO in addition to submitting to the resume book? What is the difference? A: We recommend using both venues. GeO allows you to upload and publish to more than one of the online resume books which can be reviewed by linked employers 24/7. GeO also includes an alumni resume book which you can use in perpetuity!
Q: Where can I get information about resume writing in general? A: CDO maintains a website with information on resume writing (including samples) and has resume writing packets including samples available in the office. environment.yale.edu/cdo--Job Application Materials section.
