Energy Technology Innovation Project (ETIP) Pre- and Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The Energy Technology Innovation Project (ETIP) at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University offers pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships to undertake research on energy policy and technological change. ETIP is a multi-year, interdisciplinary effort to develop, propose, and promote policy and institutional changes that support national and international efforts to stimulate energy technology innovation.

ETIP researchers seek to identify and promote strategies that countries can pursue, separately and collaboratively, for accelerating the development and deployment of advanced energy options that can reduce conventional air pollution, minimize future greenhouse-gas emissions, reduce dependence on oil, facilitate poverty alleviation, and promote economic development. ETIP's main focus on the United States, China, and India rather than only one not only multiplies directly our leverage on the world scale and facilitates the pursuit of cooperative efforts, but also allows for the development of new insights from comparisons and contrasts among conditions and strategies in the three cases.

Areas of research to choose from:
• U.S. policies for energy technology research, development, deployment and diffusion
• International collaboration in energy technology innovation
• Public-private partnerships for energy technology development and diffusion
• Energy technology innovation and diffusion in China and India, and possibly Mexico.

Deadline: February 4, 2004 for the 2004-2005 academic year. For more information, please contact Dawn Hilali, ETIP Project Assistant, dawn_hilali@harvard.edu.

National Research Council of the National Academies
Research Associateship Programs

The National Academies announces the 2005 Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs to be conducted on behalf of over 120 research laboratories throughout the United States representing nearly all U.S. government agencies with research facilities. The programs provide opportunties for Ph.D., Sc.D., or M.D. scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability to perform research on problems largely of their own choosing, yet compatible with the research interests of the sponsoring laboratory. Initiated in 1954, the Associateship Programs have contributed to the career development of over 11,000 scientists and engineers ranging from recent Ph.D. recipients to distinguished senior scientists.

Approximately 350 full-time Associateships will be awarded on a competitive basis in 2005 for research in the fields of chemistry, earth and atmospheric sciences, engineering, applied sciences, and physics. Many of the laboratories are open to both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, and to both recent doctoral recipients and senior investigators.

Postdoctoral awards are made for one or two years, renewable for a maximum of three years; senior applicants who have held the doctorate at least five years may receive awards for shorter periods. Annual stipends for recent Ph.D. recipients for the 2005 program year range from $36,000 to $65,000 depending upon the sponsoring laboratory, and are appropriately higher for senior award recipients.

Financial support is provided for allowable relocation expenses and for lmited professional travel during the duration of the award. The host of laboratory provides facilities, support services, necessary equipment, and travel necessary for the conduct of the approved research program.

Contact with the research adviser/mentor at the proposed sponsoring laboratory, including discussion of the proposed project, is necessary prior to submitting a formal application to the NRC. Deadline: Applications are accepted on a continuous basis, on February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1 for reviews in mid-March, mid-June, mid-September, and mid-January respectively. Initial awards will be announced immediately following each review with notification of alternate candidates at a later time. Detailed program information, including instructions on how to apply, is available on our website at: www.national-academies.org/rap

Private Grants for Field Research in Social Science

Earthwatch awards grants on a per capita basis, determined by multiplying the per capita grant by the number of Earthwatch volunteers deployed to the project. Per capita grants average $800, and project grants average $16,000 - 32,000. A typical project would employ from 18 to 50 total volunteers, with 5 to 12 volunteers each on 3 to 5 sequential teams. Each team normally spends 10 to 20 days in the field. Shorter and longer teams are encouraged where appropriate. Each grant may be renewed annually, contingent on staff evaluations of the project’s scientific, logistical, and budgetary success in the field. We encourage long-term research projects and request that principal investigators indicate their projected research term. Earthwatch renews about two-thirds of its grants each year. Earthwatch grants help cover the expense of maintaining research staff and volunteers in the field, including principal investigator travel to and from the field; leased or rented field equipment; room, board and in-country travel; and support of staff and associates from the host country. Earthwatch does not provide funds for capital equipment, principal investigator salaries, university overhead, or preparation of results for publication.

Eligibility: Mostly post-doctoral or equivalent scholarship, including principal investigators with commensurate life experience. We welcome proposals from advanced scholars of any nationality, covering any geographic region. Applicants intending to conduct research in foreign countries must include host-country nationals in their research staffs.
