Maximizing Your Career Development

In order to maximize your career development as you engage in study and practical experiences at Yale F&ES, CDO highly recommends a commitment to the following:

• Make career development an integral part of your F&ES experience.
• Assess your career and professional skills and identify your gaps.
• Plan Ahead! A typical job/internship search takes 3-6 months. Make this an integral component of your yearly planning.
• Make a specific time commitment to your internship and job search, beginning in September. This can be 15 minutes a day, an hour a week, or 2 hours a weekend.
• Attend the Jumpstarting The Job Search programs offered in the fall.
• Work with Career Peer Advisers and CDO staff to polish a one-page resume.
• Submit your resume for publication in the F&ES resume book, deadline November 1.
• Develop a personalized two-year career curriculum beginning the first term of the first year.
• Make an appointment to visit CDO in the fall to develop your job/internship search strategy.
• Familiarize yourself with CDO website and offerings.
• Read career development books and articles.
• Participate in a minimum of 2 CDO workshops/events per term.
• Participate in a minimum of 2 Professional Skills Modules workshops/events per term.
• Join a professional organization in your field either through a campus-based Student Interest Group (SIG) or a national/ international chapter and become an active member by signing up for job news and attending conferences.
• Build your network. Meet or contact 10 professionals/alums in your field each year. Utilize Yale’s Career Network, CDO’s off-line alumni database and faculty recommendations in addition to introducing yourself to guest lecturers, attending TGIFs and alumni events, arranging informational interviews, and combining networking opportunities with travel.
• Take advantage of lunch meetings and informal gatherings with alums and other F&ES guests, and introduce yourself whenever practicable.
• Share information with CDO. If you hear about a great opportunity you think would be of general interest, let us know so we can share with your colleagues. If you have a great idea for a program, let us know.
