Financial Aid Award Policies and Procedures

In academic year 2007–2008, the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies awarded US $3.8 million in scholarships to our master’s students. About 80% of our students receive scholarships and/or loans each year.

The school offers financial aid packages often combining scholarships, student employment and loans to students with demonstrated financial need as measured by financial aid application information, and on academic merit as shown in the applicaiton for admission and reviewed by the admission commitee. The level of funding for each student is determined at the time of admission; therefore it is critical that the financial aid application deadline of February 15 is met.

Students who demonstrate financial need may receive a scholarship to cover a portion of the student's total educational costs which include tuition, living expenses, Yale Health Plan coverage, and books/supplies. However, because funds are limited, scholarships can only be awarded to a portion of the admitted candidates.

Students must apply for aid each year; however the School aid may be increased based on an increase in educational costs (i.e., tuition increase percentage) as determined by the School. The studnet must also remain in good academic standing to renew his/her financial aid award.

Financial aid materials are updated annually, incorporating new regulations, changes in eligibility requirements, and other pertinent information. New financial aid applications are available in October of the year prior to matriculation – October 2008 for matriculation in fall 2009, for example. The on-line F&ES Financial Aid applicaiton form is available at the School’s website or in pdf format from the F&ES Financial Aid Office after October 15.

Student finanical need is based on finanical information provided only about the student's finanical circumstances. The student is also required to report any parental/family financial assistance s/he is receiving on the finanical aid applicaiton form. Currently, parent tax forms are not collected and parental financial assistance information is obtained from the student based on the honor system.

Joint Degree Students and Financial Aid
In most joint degree programs, a student splits his/her time between the two schools spending one and ½ years at each school for a total program length of three years. Joint Law/FES and Architecture/FES often require additional semesters of coursework.

Each school is fiscally independent, which means that the award a student receives at one school does not carry over to the other school with which a student is completing a joint degree program. This means the joint degree student should follow the financial aid application procedures for whichever school the student will be paying tuition. If the student is planning on paying tuition at F&ES, then the student should apply for financial aid through F&ES. If the student is paying tuition at another Yale or joint degree school, then he/she should apply for financial aid through that school.

If the student is applying for admission to two schools simultaneously, then the student should apply for financial aid at both schools. For more information, please see FAQ #15 “When should I apply for financial aid if I am applying as a joint degree student?”

5th Year Undergraduates
During their junior year at Yale College, some students apply for admission to the F&ES 5th year program. These students sometime defer their enrollment in the F&ES Masters program for a year of outside volunteer work or employment. In order to be considered for financial aid during their enrollment at F&ES, these students must submit their financial aid applicants by the February 15th prior to their matriculation into the program. This could mean that the student submits the financial aid application during their deferral or “gap” year. It is the student’s responsibility to submit all documents by the February 15 deadline.
