Fellowships and Research Opportunities for Doctoral Students
Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship
NMFS - Sea Grant Graduate Fellowship Program in Population Dynamics
NMFS - Sea Grant Joint Graduate Fellowship Program in Marine Resource Economics
The office of the Connecticut Sea Grant College Program (CTSG) announces the following NOAA Sea Grant graduate fellowship programs.
Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship Application Deadline: February 19, 2010
The Knauss fellowship, established in 1979, provides a unique educational experience to students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The program matches highly qualified graduate students with "hosts" in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one year paid fellowship. The program is named in honor of one of Sea Grant's founders, former NOAA Administrator, John A. Knauss. CTSG is now accepting applications from graduate students for the one year period due to begin about February 1, 2011. Not less than 30 applicants will be selected, of which the selected applicants assigned to the Congress may be limited to 10. Details about the program and how to apply may be found on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration web page: http://www.seagrant.noaa.gov/knauss/.
The local Sea Grant program receives and administers the cooperative agreement of $46,000 per student on behalf of each Fellow selected from their program. Of this amount, the local Sea Grant program provides $35,000 to each Fellow for stipend and living expenses (per diem). $9,000 will be used to
cover mandatory health insurance for the Fellow and moving expenses; any remaining funds shall be used for the fellow during the Fellowship year, first to satisfy academic degree-related activities, and second for Fellowship-related activities. Finally, up to $2,000 can be used to cover placement week costs. No indirect costs are allowed by this program.
Interested students should discuss this fellowship with the local Sea Grant Program Director. The Director of CTSG is Dr. Sylvain De Guise (Sylvain.Deguise@uconn.edu). A copy of the RFP can be obtained at http://web2.uconn.edu/seagrant/funding/fellowships/knauss2010.pdf. For more information, the contact from the National Sea Grant Office, Miguel Lugo, can be reached at Miguel.Lugo@noaa.gov. Complete applications must be submitted to the CTSG office no later than 4:30 pm (EST) February 19, 2010. Those intending to apply should call the Director at their earliest convenience (and at a minimum one month prior to the due date) to arrange an interview and to receive further application guidance. As completed application packages require a letter of recommendation from the Sea Grant Director, it is important to contact the Director as early as possible in the application process.
National Marine Fisheries Service - Sea Grant Joint Graduate Fellowship Program in Population Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics Application Deadline: January 15, 2010
In 1999, NOAA National Sea Grant Office and NOAA Fisheries established a Graduate Fellowship Program in two specialized areas: population dynamics and marine resource economics. These programs award PhD fellowships to students interested in careers related to 1) the population dynamics of living marine resources, and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status, and 2) the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing the economics of conservation and management of living marine resources.
The Fellowships are available to US citizens who are graduate students enrolled in PhD degree programs in academic institutions in the United States and its territories. Ph.D. candidates interested in the population dynamics of living marine resources and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status can receive up to three years of funding. Ph.D. students in marine resource economics, concentrating on the conservation and management of living marine resources, can receive two years of funding.
Sea Grant and NMFS, with required institutional matching funds, expect to support at least four new Fellows in Population Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics in the amount of $38,500 per year, commencing June 1, 2010. Fellows will work on thesis problems of public interest and relevance to NMFS and have summer internships at participating NMFS Science Centers or Laboratories under the guidance of NMFS mentors.
Applications are due to the applicant’s local state Sea Grant program (Connecticut Sea Grant) by 4:30 PM EST January 15, 2010. Those intending to apply should contact the Connecticut Sea Grant Research Coordinator, Dr. Syma Ebbin, (syma.ebbin@uconn.edu, (860) 405-9278) at their earliest convenience. A copy of the RFP for the Fellowship in Population Dynamics can be obtained at http://web2.uconn.edu/seagrant/funding/fellowships/popdynam2010.pdf and the RFP for the Fellowship in Marine Resource Economics can be obtained at http://web2.uconn.edu/seagrant/funding/fellowships/mar_res_econ.pdf. Energy Technology Innovation Project (ETIP) Pre- and Post-Doctoral Fellowships
The Energy Technology Innovation Project (ETIP) at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University offers pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships to undertake research on energy policy and technological change. ETIP is a multi-year, interdisciplinary effort to develop, propose, and promote policy and institutional changes that support national and international efforts to stimulate energy technology innovation.
ETIP researchers seek to identify and promote strategies that countries can pursue, separately and collaboratively, for accelerating the development and deployment of advanced energy options that can reduce conventional air pollution, minimize future greenhouse-gas emissions, reduce dependence on oil, facilitate poverty alleviation, and promote economic development. ETIP's main focus on the United States, China, and India rather than only one not only multiplies directly our leverage on the world scale and facilitates the pursuit of cooperative efforts, but also allows for the development of new insights from comparisons and contrasts among conditions and strategies in the three cases.
Areas of research to choose from:
• U.S. policies for energy technology research, development, deployment and diffusion
• International collaboration in energy technology innovation
• Public-private partnerships for energy technology development and diffusion
• Energy technology innovation and diffusion in China and India, and possibly Mexico.
Deadline: February 4, 2004 for the 2004-2005 academic year. For more information, please contact Dawn Hilali, ETIP Project Assistant, dawn_hilali@harvard.edu.
