Disaster Student Interest Group

Disaster SIG was started in spring 2007 by the students who wanted to participate in the disaster preparedness, relief and recovery work that is going around the world. The Disaster SIG aims to draw attention of the students and faculty in FES and in Yale University to the present dangers of disasters, both natural and industrial, around the world.

Through this interest group, students try to contact other students and alumni from the school who are in the region where the disaster has happened and try to provide assistance. The student group meets every week during the semester to discuss about disasters happening around the world. Through the same initiative, the Disaster SIG sends out Disaster awareness letter for students.

Within the last six months of its formation the SIG has organized/ been engaged in the following activities

Lecture session on Bhopal Gas Disaster ( Biggest Industrial disaster in the world) Campaign to raise funds for Bhopal disaster victims Established professional contacts with United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Established professional contacts with American Red Cross, WWF, Prevention Consortium and other organizations Established a Disaster Newsletter that aims to create awareness about current disasters happening around the world.

The ultimate aim of the Disaster SIG is to create a single window solution in the field of Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Management and Disaster Risk Reduction throughout the world so as to be able to respond to the disaster promptly when it occurs and to enable the people working in Disaster Management with our expertise.
