Professional Skills Modules (PSMs)

The Professional Skills Module (PSM) Program of F&ES aims to equip students with the professional skills needed to succeed in careers as foresters, resource managers, and environmentalists. The program is managed by student coordinators under the general guidance of CDO and a faculty advisory committee. Every September, an informal workshop is held to solicit input on programming.

Fulbright Fellowship Information Session The United States Department of State, through the Institute of International Education (IIE) and in conjunction with foreign governments and universities, annually awards approximately 1,000 grants supporting graduate study and research in over 140 countries. Robert Harper-Mangels, Asst. Dean, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences will present information about the fellowship and Yale-specific deadlines and requirements.

How to Apply to a Doctoral Program
This session with F&ES students, faculty, and staff will focus on the following:
•How to determine if attending a graduate/professional school is for you
•How to evaluate doctoral programs
•Funding/financial support structures of doctoral programs
•Culture/expectations of doctoral programs
•How to apply to these programs

U.S. Presidential Management Fellowship Info Session THE U.S. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS SEEKING GRADUATE (master's or doctoral-level degree) STUDENTS WHO WANT TO WORK for AMERICA. The PMF Program is a leadership development program that provides opportunities to work with and impact public policy, to serve one's country, and to receive competitive pay, benefits, and career advancement. America is looking for outstanding graduate students with U.S. citizenship to work in the Federal service.

Locating Grants and Fellowships for Summer Research and Internships If you are seeking money for a summer research project or for something larger, numerous resources at the School exist for your use. Topics: guidelines for the applying to the Jubitz, TRI, Class of 1980, Carpenter-Sperry Research Fund, Doris Duke, Switzer, Compton, F&ES Summer Internship Fund, and other fellowships available locally to F&ES students. Also, an overview of print and non-print resources available for tracking down outside Yale funding sources will be presented.

Using the GeO System to Maximize Your Internship and Job Searches The CDO staff will conduct an online demonstration of the GeO Program and walk you through the features/components of the Program. Learn how to: create your personal profile; upload resumes and other documents (i.e. cover letters, writing samples, etc.); publish your resume in a resume book(s) for employer access; create and save quick searches to locate jobs and/or internships; track online applications; sign up for on-campus interviews; and learn about the Mentor module and locate mentors/alums for networking purposes and/or career advice.

Using our Extensive Networks for Career & Internship Searches
Learn about the many resources available to students for seeking out: Informational interviews, internship & job vacancy leads and panelists and speakers for student interest groups. Find out more about the “Yale Network” (F&ES and Yale alumni, students, faculty, and staff) and resources to aid in you internship or career search. Also, learn more about how the CDO web site, the GeO Program, and various listservs can be used as resources to assist you in your searches.

Resume Writing Write, update or re-write your resume. Topics include: creating a master resume, targeting your resume to specific fields or positions, streamlining your format, how to be detailed yet concise, quantifying your experience and increasing readability.

Cover Letter Writing Learn how to write cover letters that get you interviews. Topics include: deconstructing the job description, selling your unique qualifications, researching the organization, and formatting basics.

Interviewing 101
Prepare for job interviews. Topics include: interview formats, what to wear, what to bring, researching organizations, preparing your answers and questions, and how to follow up.

Salary Negotiations Workshop
Learn about negotiating salary and benefits during the job search process. Topics include: Overview of the evaluation process, common questions & guidelines for responses, researching fair market compensation & negotiable items, and useful phrases when negotiating.

Domestic and International Showcases: Summer Internships
Each fall a number of students who worked and conducted research from the previous summer share their experiences and provide advice with interested first year students. Attendees also learn about many resources available and deadlines to consider. We will hold sessions focusing both on domestic U.S. opportunities and also on international ones.
