This course uses an ecological perspective to study the factors influencing the emergence, maintenance, and transmission of human pathogens. Particular emphasis is on pathogens transmitted to humans by arthropods (vector-borne) or animal reservoirs (zoonotic) like malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, Lyme disease, rabies, etc. Students learn how human risk for these diseases can be described and predicted by understanding the ecology of pathogen, vectors, and reservoirs.
