I’d say the gap between religion and the environment is that people in the US are blinded by materialism and literal interperetation of scriptures. The worship of their god or higher spirit is bound within the confines of the literal, reverence for material wealth, and the belief that we as humans can maintain our existence beyond the haven of the natural world. Those who believe all matter is evil see the natural environment as something to be loathed and certainly not cared for. Combining religion with reverence for the earth would disempower religious institutions and make the whole earth a church, mosque, synagogue, temple etc. People with power are not so apt to give it up. There are humans who believe that they are hollier than the entire earth, and that the earth is here to accomodate our desires. I could go on forever considering these are deeply rooted problems in the human condition, but I’ll instead end here.

I agree with Dylan. Typically, western religion has viewed nature as something to be conquered. “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:28. Key word: subdued. Religions that have been coexistent with nature have historically been looked at as heretical.
