FB internship

Four F&ES students and alumni interned at World Resources Institute last summer. Mariana Vedoveto (MEM '16) and Santiago Cortes (MEM '17) worked in the Natural Infrastructure for Water team; Paloma Caro (MEM '16) worked in the Gender and Forests team; Andrew Wu (MEM '16) is in the new Restoration Economy team.

1 U.S. Federal Internships (EPA, DOE, USFS, ERS, Interior, White House: CEQ, OMB, OSTP)

Description: Individual agencies offer paid and unpaid opportunities, announced during FESinDC and posted in FESNext.  CDO manages advertising for several White House internships when available.
Stipend: Unpaid and Paid.

2 United Nations Development Program (and other UN agencies)

Deadline to apply: Not specified.
Location: UNDP country office/ regional center/ Headquarters in New York
Description: Internships are designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, but also complements other international studies, including law.
Notes: CDO has coordinated with campus partners and UNDP LAC for 3 years on facilitating internship opportunities in country offices in the Latin American and Caribean region, creating a large increase in number of internships with UNDP LAC.  Internships in other UNDP locations and other UN agencies (UNEP, FAO, The World Bank, GEF) have typically been arranged through direct application, and networking with F&ES alumni and other previous connections in country and regional centers.  Students are encouraged to apply for funding through F&ES and other resources as internships are unpaid.

3 Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Climate Corps Fellowships

Location: US nationwide
Description: EDF Climate Corps places specially-trained Masters students in leading companies, cities and universities to build the business case for energy efficiency.
Notes: CDO actively coordinates with EDFCC program to provide current F&ES students and recent alumni with the opportunity to conduct fellowships with clients in public and private sector.

4 World Wildlife Fund (WWF)

Notes: WWF typically provides information on internships and full-time opportunities during CDO's annual FESinDC visit in the spring, as well as through postings in FESNext.

5 Natural Resources Defense Council

Description: NRDC offers legal internships and non-legal internships within our program areas as well as in Administration, Communications and Development.
Notes: F&ES offers one funded NRDC Internship per year through the Cameron Speth Fellowship for students from developing nations and Japan which is advertised by CDO.  Interviews for the Cameron Speth Fellowship are typically held during FESinDC.  CDO posts NRDC internships in FESNext. Students have also actively networked into internships with NRDC in DC and New York offices.

6 World Resource Institute (WRI)

Description: WRI is a global environmental think tank that goes beyond research to put ideas into action. We have over 50 active projects working on aspects of global climate change, sustainable markets, ecosystem protection, and environmentally responsible governance.

7 Yale School Forests

Description: 
The Apprentice Forester Internship Program (6-10 POSITIONS): An intensive educational experience in forest management and stewardship.  Over the last decade we have been increasing the number of the masters student interns who perform all phases of forest management work including continuous forest inventory, stand exams, mapping and photographic interpretation, timber sale layout, marking of silvicultural prescriptions, wildlife habitat assessments, contract compliance and supervision, road drainage and maintenance, boundary marking, and landowner outreach and extension. 

The Masters Student Research Internship Program: The Yale Forests are used by 2-4 Masters students per year for summer research -- both official Dissertation and Master's projects as well as projects within the context of different courses such as economics and management.  Work includes ecosystem services, open space recreation, conservation planning, restoration, community partnerships and governance, and forest policy.  Students MUST be associated with a faculty advisor and mentor.

8 Urban Resources Initiative

Description: URI offers paid summer internships for FE&S students. These community forestry internships provide job training and real-world practice while making positive changes in New Haven communities.  URI also offers up to 12 part-time internships through the GreenSkills program during the academic year.

CDO works directly with SPREP to advertise climate change internships every year.  Internships are posted in FESNext and remote information sessions are held at F&ES. Students are encouraged to apply for funding through F&ES and other resources as internships are unpaid.

10 The Nature Conservancy

Location: throughout the US and other countries
Description: The Nature Conservancy’s Globe Internship program provides university students and recent graduates short-term paid assignments to explore disciplines in our conservation work.
Notes: Students have typically networked with alumni and other connections and apply through local TNC offices.  TNC also offers a special diversity initiative internship, Globe.

11 Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection

Deadline to apply: The first business day in March for summer placements.
Location: Hartford, CT
Description: Interns are afforded an opportunity to familiarize themselves with hands-on work of the Agency, such as research, monitoring, enforcement, environmental clean-up, community involvement, and prevention.
Notes:  CDO assists students interested in conducting internships at any department in CT DEEP.  Students MUST submit the application by the deadline in order to be considered.  Students are encouraged to apply for funding through F&ES and other resources as internships are unpaid.  Information on college internships can be found here.
