My name is Jena Clarke. I’m a first year 2015 Master of Environmental Management degree candidate and a recent addition to the Admissions Office team. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences as I settle in and navigate the abundance of opportunities F&ES has to offer through classes, jobs, student groups, social life… the options seem practically endless!

I’ve recently begun my work as an F&ES recruiter with the Admissions Office and will be one of the bloggers and travelers telling you about the wonders of F&ES and how to apply! Youth Participation in the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) – We Can Do It?!
The UNFF is the international platform of 197 Member States and other stakeholders on all international forest-related policy processes. To encourage participation of civil society, the UNFF (like other UN bodies) has instituted Major Groups (MGs). Each MG communicates with the UNFF through their Focal Point. The objective of the Major Group Children and Youth (MGCY) is to bring the opinions, initiatives and proposals of the young generation into the international forest policy dialog. Making use of this platform and increasing its effectiveness is a great opportunity for all young people in the world to be heard.

We are gearing up for the next few months on the road, meeting new faces, reconnecting with those we have been working with over the past 12 months and honestly…we are excited!!! We have been making changes, reading your feedback, brainstorming and trying to figure out how we can better articulate to all of you, what it means to be part of F&ES. So, we’ve decided to start a slightly structured, slightly flexible, Campus Visit Program. The list recognizes the colleges and universities across the country with significantly higher-than-average rates of women in their fire science and forestry programs.

Nearly 1300 participants took part in the tenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF10) in Istanbul from April 8th – 19th 2013. For the first time, the biannual conference took place away from the UN Headquarters in New York. Over 50 ministers and high-level officials participated in the main negotiating topics:
- Forests in the post-2015 development agenda,
- Forests in a green economy,
- Payments for ecosystem services (PES),
- Introducing a sustainable development goal (SDG) on forests or natural resources, and
- A global legally binding instrument on forests.

I am constantly amazed by our students. They are incredibly motivated, passionate, smart and fun. A great way to get a sense of their dedication and work is through the summer blog section of Sage Magazine. Current students have been blogging about their summer experiences all over the world (the first 4 posts come to us from Iraq, Rwanda, Peru and Tanzania, as examples), and they will continue until they get back to campus in August. Our students are required to do a summer internship or research for their thesis depending on what program they are in, and they are encouraged to travel the world to do so. F&ES is known to encourage and celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of our students. A great example of what our students go on to do is highlighted in the work that Zack Parisa (F&ES ’09) and Max Uhlenhuth (Yale College ’12) have been doing with SilviaTerra. SilviaTerra has developed two products that will assist in forest inventory and tracking forest change across the globe. There are a whole slew of activities and groups you should consider in participating, one of which is the Yale Environment Review (YER) – a student-run review that provides weekly updates on environmental research findings.
YER aims to bridge the gap between environmentally-related academic research and its application to policy and management. In order to increase access to specialized information, YER publishes readable and concise summaries of recent original, peer-reviewed literature so that it can be useful to those engaged in the field of environmental and natural resource management.
This is a great opportunity to get involved in one of the many student-run groups within the FES community while honing skills as an environmental writer with published works for a wider audience. There is also course credit option…
