Research Group News

  • New position: Jan. 2013 - Recent postdoc Dr. Marta Vicarelli began a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at UMass-Amherst in the Dept. of Economics.
  • New student funding: Dec. 2012 - Ph.D. student Coco Liu received funding from the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies for her research.
  • New postdoc fellowship and funding: Oct. 2012 - Postdoc Gavin Pereira received the Sidney Sax Public Health Overseas Fellowship from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council. This fellowship provides 4 years of funding for postdoctoral research in the U.S. and Australia. 
  • New position: Sep. 2012 - As a Presidential Management Fellow, recent graduate Sarah A. Uhl is serving as an Environmental Protection Specialist for the U.S. E.P.A.'s Office of Pollution Prevention & Toxics in Washington, DC. One of her first projects involves updating regulations on existing chemicals, such as PCBs.
  • New position: Aug. 2012 - Recent graduate Randy Caruso, Jr. will join the OECD/IEA Climate Change Expert Group in Paris.
  • Postdoc and student conference presentations: Aug. 2012 - Ayaz Hyder, Jiyoung Son, Keita Ebisu, Mercedes Bravo, and Anobha Gurung presented at the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology conference. Coco Liu also attended.
  • Award: May 2012 - The article "Meta-analysis of the association between short-term exposure to ambient ozone and respiratory hospital admissions" by Meng Ji, Daniel Cohan, and Michelle Bell was selected as one of the best of the year for the journal Environmental Research Letters and will be republished in a special issue.

  • Student conference presentation: May 2012 - Keita Ebisu presented at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) conference.

  • Award: Apr. 2012 - Sarah Uhl was awarded first place in the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Masters of Environmental Science Colloquium poster competition.

  • Award: Apr. 2012 - Incoming doctoral student Amruta Sarma was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to conduct research in India.

  • Award: Mar. 2012 - Dr. Bell was awarded the Prince Albert II de Monaco / Institut Pasteur Award. Click here for a video on the Monaco Award by Prof. Alice Dautry, Director of the Institut Pasteur.

      
 
  • Award: Mar. 2012 - Anobha Gurung was awarded research funding from the Yale Global Health Initiative, Yale Tropical Resources Institute (TRI), and the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies (YIBS).

  • Postdoc conference presentation: Feb. 2012 - Dr. Jiyoung Son presented at the American Association of Geographers conference in New York, NY. Alumni Dr. Brooke Anderson also presented.

  • New position: Jan. 2012 - Sarah Uhl was awarded a Presidential Management Fellowship.

  • Award: Nov. 2011 - Dr. Marta Vicarelli, with Arturo Aguilar, won the Best Poster Award at the Northeast Universities Development Consortium Conference. 

  • New position: Nov. 2011 - Dr. Brooke Anderson began a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in the Dept. of Biostatistics.

  • Postdoc and student conference presentations: Oct. 2011 - Dr. Jiyoung Son presented at the International Society for Exposure Science in Baltimore, MD. Anobha Gurung also attended.

  • Postdoc and student conference presentations: June 2011 - Presentations at the Society for Epidemiological Research conference in Montreal, Canada were made by Dr. Brooke Anderson and Keita Ebisu. Sarah Uhl also attended. Randy Caruso attended the Air and Waste Management Association conference in Orlando, Florida.

  • Award: May 2011 - Sarah Uhl was named a Switzer Fellow. Randy Caruso was a Switzer Fellowship finalist.

  • Award: May 2011 - Sarah Uhl was research awarded funds from the Jubitz Family Foundation and a matching grant from the Carpenter/Sperry Fund.

  • Award: Mar. 2011 - Dr. Brooke Anderson received Honorable Mention for the Reuel A. Stallones Student Prize Paper in recognition of outstanding contributions to epidemiological methods.

  • Award: Dec. 2010 - Sarah Uhl and Randy Caruso won awards of research funds from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies based on their research proposals.

  • Award: Sep. 2010 - Brooke Anderson won an award for “Outstanding Research Conducted by a Student in the Area of Environmental Epidemiology” at the International Society of Exposure Analysis/International Society for Environmental Epidemiology conference in Seoul, Korea.

  • Award: Sep. 2010 - Anobha Gurung won an award for “Outstanding Research Conducted by a Student in the Area of Human Exposure Analysis” at the International Society of Exposure Analysis/International Society for Environmental Epidemiology conference in Seoul, Korea.

  • Postdoc and student conference presentations: Sep. 2010 - Presentations at the International Society of Exposure Analysis/International Society for Environmental Epidemiology conference in Seoul, Korea were made by Dr. Jiyoung Son, Brooke Anderson, Keita Ebisu, and Anobha Gurung, as well as recent graduates Meng Ji and Anna Ruth Pickett.

  • Award: Sep. 2010 - Brooke Anderson and Dr. Bell were runner-up for the Kenneth Rothman Epidemiology Prize, awarded for the best paper in Epidemiology, for their paper “Weather-related mortality: How heat, cold, and heat waves affect mortality in the United States.”

  • New position: Aug. 2010 - Recent graduate, Dr. Curt DellaValle, began a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute.
