Through a combination of consistent, high quality workshop and course offerings, F&ES students are able to improve their competency in five core professional skills areas: Leadership & Interpersonal Skills, Communications, Project Management & Finance, Technical Skills and Work-Life Balance.

The Professional Skills team coordinates targeted programming for F&ES students, while connecting students with other resources and courses across Yale and beyond.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: NEW for 2018-2019!
F&ES students begin their programs with a Jumpstart – a set of optional workshops designed to familiarize students with skills they will need while at F&ES. Held at the beginning of the semester, these sessions cover:

Professional Practice Team

Josefina Cobian
Module Coordination and Evaluation
Dora Xu
Skill Share Coordination
Minna Brown
Director of Academic Affairs
Brad Gentry
Associate Dean of Professional Practice
Professional Skills Modules (PSMs) are offered throughout the year. Beginning in 2018, completion of four of the eight Modules is a graduation requirement for the MEM degree, but because PSMs focus on skills that every graduate will need in their professional lives, each session is open to all students. Modules are held on Fridays and are led by best in class facilitators.  Registration is required. Topics covered are:
More information on the PSMs can be found here.

For-credit FES courses focus on topics that are best taught over time. These include:
  • Financial Concepts for Environmental Managers
  • Environmental Communicator
  • Fundamentals of Working with People
Not-for-credit offerings are organized by students and others over the course of the school year. Past skill-share topics include backpacking basics for researchers, Google drive, photography, etc. If you have a skill you would like to share with your peers, and would like to run a workshop this year, please complete this proposal form here.

F&ES students are fortunate to have access to the F&ES Professional Communications Center for individual coaching sessions covering presentations, interviews, and other topics. Students can sign up for multiple sessions throughout the year.
