Position General Purpose

Manage visual identity initiatives and graphic design for the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES). Reporting to the Director of Communications and Web Operations, the Design Manager is expected to lead the process of creating and implementing visual identity standards for the School. The Design Manager will be responsible for creating materials which express information clearly and with impact, while setting F&ES apart from competitors. The Design Manager will work with various constituents across the School to manage visual communications projects from conception to final product.

Essential Duties

  1. Create, distribute, apply, maintain and enforce visual identity standards and practices for F&ES, providing school-wide consultation for, and oversight of, graphic design.
  2. Serve as the School’s primary graphic designer, managing and executing projects for external and internal distribution, working with a wide range of internal clients (deans, senior staff, students and faculty).
  3. Manage design, scheduling and production for the school’s biannual print publication, Canopy, as well as other communications, marketing and web development projects.
  4. Lead client meetings to determine parameters for each project based on the client’s objective and the School’s priorities, and maintain communication throughout the process.
  5. Create original visual concepts and themes to illustrate ideas, using creative judgment with regard to typography and imagery based on the project.
  6. Design high-quality user interfaces (UI), user experiences (UX), publications and promotional materials for multiple platforms; websites, posters, presentations, data-graphics and other formats for print, web and social media. Work directly with web developers and printing services providers to produce final outputs for each project.
  7. Monitor content and provide feedback to maintain the consistency of messaging and presentation throughout school materials across all platforms.
  8. Research and create, or procure, photos and graphics to illustrate concepts. Help maintain a library of F&ES images and videos for use on promotional projects.
  9. Perform other duties as needed.

Education and Experience

Four years of related work experience and a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (graphic design, marketing or communications); or two years of experience and a Master's Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
 

Skills & Abilities

  1. Advanced skills and fluency in Illustrator and InDesign are required, with proven ability in Photoshop or Sketch and other graphics software, to create, recreate, repurpose, or reformat graphics and files.
  2. Strong interpersonal skills with excellent communication habits and follow-through.
  3. Timeliness, accuracy, reliability, attention to detail, and an ability to handle a variety of projects simultaneously are crucial.
  4. Ability to work independently with little oversight.
  5. Ability to lead a project from conceptualization to finished product.
