The Western Resources Student Interest Group (WESTIES)
The WESTIES student interest group of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies promotes awareness of and action on topics important to the Western United States. Vast natural resources in the public domain, coupled with rapid urban expansion and development have increased the need for effective management in the West. WESTIES members explore creative solutions to western challenges and take advantage of the unique opportunities present in the region. The group organizes events for the Yale and FES community which address present western resources-related topics including: green development, ecosystem management, water rights and consumption, mining and resource extraction, recreation, forest restoration and fire, wildlife habitat destruction, renewable-energy infrastructure, and the conflicts surrounding environmental regulations and statutes. Additionally, WESTIES hosts social events in order to keep the western spirit alive at Yale. WESTIES welcomes all interested participants.
