Student Assistantships and Employment Opportunities

The school awards over ninety F&ES Student Assistantships as part of financial aid. These positions vary from clerical work to research, editorial or library work. They pay $15 per hour and are limited to 10 hours per week.

University Student Employment opportunities are listed at the Student Employment Office at 246 Church Street, or on the SEO webstie. Positions are available throughout the University and the City of New Haven, with hourly rates ranging from $11 to $15.

Teaching Fellowships are not awarded as part of the financial aid package but are available at the University for qualified students. Interested students must contact professors or departments directly. The usual salary is $3,700 per term

Student Assistantships

Only students who received a Student Assistantship on their financial aid award letter ($4,200) are eligible for Student Assistantship positions. These positions are listed in the Student Assistantship file.

How Do I Find a Position?
  1. Download the Excel file (username and password required) to find a position that you are interested in.
  2. If the position is available (marked OPEN), contact the supervisor listed in the database. For most supervisors the easiest way to reach them is by email. Email addresses consist of the firstname.lastname@yale.edu.
  3. Phone numbers are also provided in the database; however, some professors may be difficult to reach since they may travel or complete research in the field and have irregular hours in the office.
  4. Each supervisor will determine the application/interview process for that position.
How Do I Get Paid?
  1. Once you have found a position, you will need to complete the Yale Student Employment W4 and I-9 Forms. These forms will be available at the FES Business Office, Room 27, Sage Hall.
  2. Notify Linda Jacobs that you have been hired for a position. Email her your supervisor’s name and the date that you plan on starting.
  3. Positions pay $15/hour for 10 hours/week for a total of $2,100 per semester. Student assistantships are only for the fall and spring semesters. Depending on your supervisor’s needs, students can work more or less per week as long as the average is 10 hours/week. Students should never work more than 19 hours/week unless on semester break.
  4. Completed time sheets must be electronically signed weekly by 8:00 am Monday morning. Time sheets submittted incomplete or late will not be processed.
  5. Payment issues should be brought to the attention of the business office (Sage Hall, room 27). Please contact Florence Grandelli or Denise Mrazik.
  6. The University offers a Direct Deposit service. To request this service, complete a University Payroll Services Direct Deposit Request Form.
  7. Bring your completed form and a voided check to the Student Employment Office at 246 Church Street on the 2nd Floor, or the Yale University Payroll Office at 155 Whitney Avenue on the First Floor. Yale takes approximately two weeks to set up direct deposit.
