About the Program
The Professional Skills Module (PSM) Program of FES aims to equip students with the professional skills needed to succeed in careers as foresters, resource managers, and environmentalists.
The program is managed by student assistants under the general guidance of CDO and a faculty advisory committee. Every September, an informal workshop is held to solicit input on programming.
PSM covers 8 major skill areas:
Computer Skills
Project Skills
Interpersonal Skills
Business Skills
Leadership Skills
Research Skills
Communication Skills
Technical Skills
The PSM program collaborates with Student Interest Groups (SIG) and other units within the school to deliver programs of mutual interest, and students are encouraged to submit suggestions throughout the year.

Sample Programs
Fred Strebeigh: Writing Environmental Op-ed Pieces
In an interactive style similar to his seminar on environmental writing, Fred will walk us through how to effectively communicate environmental issues to the general public through op-ed pieces.
Master Composter Workshop
From the knowledgeable and entertaining Master Composters of the Queens Botanical Garden: How to set up and maintain odor-free composting worm bins in your own kitchen and how to implement a composting program in a large-scale institutional setting. Orders for worms and bins will be taken. Lunch will be served.
InDesign Training Through the Yale Learning Center
Kevin Doyle: Environmental Career Envisioning and Planning.
Kevin Doyle: Skills for Change Agents.
Back by popular demand, Kevin Doyle will spend a day leading a hands-on leadership workshop focused on the nuts and bolts of collaboration, team-building, and carrying vision into action. The workshop is a highly interactive combination of lecture, small group exercises, games, and group discussions with examples from contemporary environmental problems. The ‘facilitative leadership’ model teaches aspiring leaders how to empower people to work together to achieve a common goal.
TWO SESSIONS: Consensus Building and Communication Skills & Assessment and Coalition Building for Community Preservation with FES alum Ona Ferguson
SESSION 1: Consensus Building and Communication Skills
What does it mean to build consensus within a group on a subject of joint interest? Why would you want to reach consensus, and how do you know when you’ve done so? This three-hour workshop is designed to introduce the idea of consensus building as well as to provide participants with an overview of important communication skills.
SESSION 2: Assessment and Coalition Building for Community Preservation: Working on natural resource protection requires building coalitions and working with group. This three-hour workshop, designed for those involved in the protection and stewardship of natural and cultural resources, includes information on laying the groundwork for effective multi-group collaboration through lectures and group exercises.
