Financial Aid Award Policies and Procedures

In 2006–2007, the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies awarded US $2.8 million in scholarships to our master’s students. About 80% of our students receive grants and/or loans each year. The school offers financial aid through a combination of scholarships, employment and loans to students with demonstrated financial need as measured by financial aid applications, and on academic merit as shown by the Application for Admission. The level of funding for each student is determined at the time of admission; therefore it is critical that the financial aid application deadline of February 15 is met.

Students who demonstrate financial need may receive a scholarship to cover a portion of the student budget. However, because funds are limited, scholarships can only be awarded to a portion of the admitted candidates.

Students must apply for aid each year; however the School aid will remain the same for the length of the student's program as long as financial need and FES resources stay the same, and the student remains in good academic standing. A student is not, in most cases, awarded an increase in his/her financial aid package for the second year.

Financial aid materials are updated annually, incorporating new regulations, changes in eligibility requirements, and other pertinent information. New financial aid applications are available in October of the year prior to matriculation – October 2007 for matriculation in fall 2008, for example. New forms are available at the School’s website or from the F&ES Financial Aid Office after October 15.

Students are also required to report any parental financial assistance they are receiving on the Family Support Form. Currently, parent tax forms are not collected and parental financial assistance is obtained from the student based on the honor system.
